Whereas Lord concentrated solely on the Solomons, author Eric A. Feldt includes the New Guinea campaign and the history of the efforts made behind the lines in Australia to launch the intelligence effort at the beginning of the war. Many histories of the Pacific Campaign seem to just give passing mention of the coastwatchers and their crucial role, but Feldt chronicles many of the major intelligence coups by the coastwatchers and their native allies that were directly responsible for critical Alllied victories in the Southwest Pacific from 1942-44. Coastwatchers were no less important for their roles in the rescues of many Allied airmen, sailors and troops who ended up on Japanese-held islands. Feldt likewise gives detailed accounts of the dangers they and their native allies faced and the privations and losses they suffered. Feldt's book fills in a huge part of the story of the Allied victory in the South Pacific and the indispensable roles played by the Australian Navy's brave little service.
I was immediately drawn to this book when I realized I had often heard about the potent impact of coastwatchers in the Pacific but had never dug below my superficial knowledge. And it turns out I knew even less than I'd assumed.The very title of the book and the covert operation captures the intuition that helped develop and manage the critical information network that provided the Allies with a tactical consistent edge. The story recites these many, many helpful results without having to emphasize how vital this proved.The level of detail was well considered, never bogging down but also not stepping back to such an overview that the flavor of the biggest opponent - nature - was ever lost. The unrelenting impact of jungle and terrain on all those caught up in these battlegrounds is well described.This is a well composed story of a complex effort to shape the outcome of warfare through superior intelligence gathered by resolute individuals operating in the midst of enemy territory.
The narrative is straightforward, clear, and simple. The story of the courage and resourcefulness of the coastwatchers is told with humor, and thoroughness but without the tedious chronological plodding often encountered in first-person accounts. I learned a good deal of new information and gained a better perspective about a part of WWII that I was already very interested in. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the war in the Pacific.
Great book. I am avid reader of books on the war in the Pacific and this book did not disappoint. The book goes into the adventures and hardships of the coast watchers and goes into their many accomplishments. The book was well written and it flowed very well.
Interesting stories about this little known aspect of WWII. The commitment and sacrifice of these coastwatchers is well documented and described. Enjoyable read for anyone interested in how a world-wide effort was required to defeat the assault of tyrannical Axis forces.
It was an interesting history of a small group that were responsible for major benefits to our forces fighting to reclaim the South Pacific Islands from the Japanese. The book contains no maps or charts leading to great confusion as to what happened where..
Great research on a topic that too little has been written about. A good read for people who don't know a lot about the people who risked so much.
Even though Feldt was not in charge of the dispatchers throughout the war, he has shown through this book the courage and ingenuity that it took to bring final victory to the Solomon Islands and New Guinea. It is a tribute to the coastwatchers and the natives who helped them.
