Review

"I can't think of another book with which I disagree so strongly that has engaged me as deeply as this one. Scott Shay makes the case for religious belief with deep scholarship, clear logic and great civility. It would be wonderful if other advocates on both sides would take up this discourse in a similarly civil manner." (Barney Frank, Former Member of the House of Representatives)"In Good Faith is an extraordinary and beautifully written book, which offers an important new perspective. In Good Faith set the stage for a fruitful dialogue between believers and nonbelievers in the discussion of faith and scientific rationality. Scott Shay argues that monotheists and atheists can be on the same side and combat idolatry together. His definition of idolatry as a dangerous deification of finite beings and the ideas clarifies that modern rational critiques of religion can actually be helpful in clearing monotheism of its idolatrous streams." (Monsignor Tomas Halik, Professor of Sociology, Charles University and President of Czech Christian Academy)"This book is an inspired and profound exposition on the pitfalls of the idolatries of our age. What a remarkable manifesto on the rationality and indeed the beauty of faith as well as the ugliness and betrayals of idolatry! I hope that my fellow Muslims will give this book a fair hearing. It will only strengthen their own faith in the One and Only God who we all worship." (Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl, UCLA School of Law)"Sit down with Shay as he speaks of his faith, and the reason he is a serious Jew. Here is an honest account of how a modern person finds meaning and purpose in a thoughtful consideration of ancient texts." (Professor Laurie Zoloth, Dean, The University of Chicago Divinity School)"Scott Shay has written a vigorous, well-informed and highly readable defense of faith in a secular age. Impressive in its scope and depth, it should be read by Jews, Christians, and Muslims, as well as skeptics, for they will find in it the reflective wisdom of one who has thought long and hard about the human struggle against idolatry in all its forms." (Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, Professor of Law and Ethics, Kings College)"Friedrich Schleiemacher's On Religion: Speeches to Its Cultured Despisers (1799) took on the major arguments of the enlightened intelligentsia of his day. He, thereby revived Christianity and enabled it to thrive in the rise of reason and science. So Schleiemacher is known as the father of modern theology. Scott Shay's In Good Faith has picked up that historic baton and bridges believers with non-believers, of all religious persuasions, into a compelling 21st century story about why faith matters for healthy human communities today." (Professor Dwight N. Hopkins, University of Chicago Divinity School)"In Good Faith is a tour-de-force! Scott Shay considers a wide array of scholarly and popular arguments, sources, narratives, and conversations regarding religion, morality, and text in making a modern case for the plausibility and rationality of religion. In reading through its pages, I felt I was examining a 21st Century companion to Schleiermacher's classic On Religion: Speeches to Its Cultural Despisers. Written in a clear and engaging fashion, In Good Faith will deservedly capture the attention of thoughtful persons interested in questions of faith and doubt, good and evil. I recommend highly!"  (Rabbi David Ellenson, Chancellor Emeritus of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion)"Scott Shay invites you to a friendly but serious conversation with someone who is honest, learned, and sincere on a topic that requires far more nuanced exchanges than mere tweets and sound bites at a time when idolaters, both atheists and monotheists, are misusing and misrepresenting religions, misinterpreting and misappropriating the Bible to further their base ambitions while ignoring God's rational and compassionate visions for humanity and the world that are articulated in the Bible and practiced and valued by rational and modern believers. Whether one is a skeptic, Jew, Christian, Muslim, atheist, humanist, spiritual but not religious, or non-affiliate, you are in for an intellectual and spiritual treat if you dare to be open and honest about your own rationale for and experience of your belief or unbelief."  (Professor Uriah Y. Kim, Dean of Graduate Theological Union)"Scott Shay, in a deeply personal, yet academically rigorous study, shows why it is rational to believe in God, especially in this modern era. Modernity is deeply grounded in the great monotheistic religions, which created and inspired societal structures that value equality, justice, morality, ethics and care for the needy. This book defends those foundations against the common atheist argument that our modern values have emerged from secularism. Shay demonstrates why both faith and reason are necessary in our era. Whether from the political left or right, deeply religious or secular, readers will benefit from Shay's insights as to how good faith can help heal our fractured society." (Patrick McHenry, Congressman, North Carolina)In Good Faith is written with sincerity, honesty and intelligence. The book presents ideas in a straightforward manner without overbearing theological and philosophical language and without a dogmatic tone. In Good Faith reveals a depth of knowledge by Shay of the religious situation in contemporary Western Society and especially in America. I hope that many readers take advantage of this resource. They will be intellectually rewarded for having done so." (Professor Seyyed Hossein Nasr, Islamic Studies, The George Washington University)

As an avid reader, I have enjoyed books by Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins and Yuval Hariri. Each of these authors argues that religion is outdated at best, and a source of war and evil at worst."In Good Faith" is Scott Shay's response to the question: does religion make sense?Scott does an outstanding and insightful job of answering the question affirmatively. To summarize, Scott demonstrates several key points:First, monotheism represented a major advance in culture, civilization, ethics, and lawfulness. Prior to monotheism - which was Judaism's gift to the world via Abraham - the world was characterized by lawlessness. To the extent other codes of law existed, they served primarily to empower dictators.Second, the real enemy of society is idolatry. Four millennia ago, idolatry was, literally, the "false god" that Abraham sought to replace. The gods of that age were really idols that enabled rulers to justify their abuse of power. Today, Scott makes the case that modern idolators include dictators like Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, and Kim Jung-On.Third, we should separate optics from reality. While it is true that people have committed heinous crimes in the name of religion, it is neither fair not accurate to lay those crimes at the foot of monotheism. Further, while some have criticized religion for justifying capital punishment, in fact the Torah served to limit the cases in which capital punishment could be applied. And in practice, as reflected in commentaries in the Mishnah, these applications were extremely rare.In sum, the monotheism that Abraham delivered to the world was unique in that it sought to advance justice for all, and not power for the rulers. This idea remains as radical, transformative, and important today as it was four millennia ago.Kudos to Scott for a powerful book!

Having just finished reading In Good Faith with the manifold ideas and concepts therein, which are interspersed with information in diverse areas of human knowledge, I would unhesitatingly recommend it to the reader who is regularly or even occasionally absorbed in thoughts beyond the mundane. Whether one is a believer, an atheist or an agnostic, this book is thought provoking, challenging and instructive in its idea- packed pages. With over 500 endnotes, I was amazed at the research that went into writing this treatise on faith. It should be on the syllabus of every college course on religion. Scott Shay, whose day job is in the financial sector, has outdone many who write on this subject and are members of the cloth. Impressive!

In these divisive times, where believers and non-believers spend so much time attempting to prove the irrelevance of each other, it is so refreshing and quite frankly a great relief to read "In Good Faith," a sincere effort to find a common ground. With great clarity and intelligence, timely humor and common sense, and a firm scholarly basis, Mr. Shay guides us through the essential tenets of the Bible--the ills of idolatry, the power of love, the virtues of following the Golden Rule to create a just and decent society for all people--that we all can ascribe to. For believers who may not have really investigated the Bible, Mr. Shay presents cogent arguments for the historical veracity of the Biblical story. And for non-believers, it can be a story, maybe more metaphorical, that nonetheless espouses views that atheists can accept and live by. The Bible has been a major influence on world civilization for thousands of years and is here to stay. While it may not be for everyone and may have been used for negative purposes in the past, Mr. Shay has overwhelmingly shown how it also has brought disparate peoples together in the name of that which is good and just for everyone. If there was ever a time to embrace the Bible as a positive force, it is now! If you care about the world, I strongly urge and recommend that you read this book!

IN GOOD FAITH tackles a multitude of questions fairly and fearlessly. It is that rare combination which consistently illustrates all sides of complex questions about Faith, the Bible, the existence of God, the history of Atheism. Written by Scott Shay with the courage of an open mind, the author confronts and explains many theories from all schools of thought with solid research, original ideas and most importantly, humor and heart. Any person with a brain in his or her head and feelings in their heart should read it and enjoy the pleasure of a thinking man’s approach to “Questioning Religion and Atheism”. This book is a rare and beautiful work. Bravo!!

“In Good Faith” Amazon book review:I strongly encourage you to read this book! “In Good Faith” is an inspirational and intellectual journey that thoughtfully and respectfully weaves the important messages and contributions of the Bible, with historical events, and modern-thought that delivers an honest and fair defense to Atheists’ claims that religion is irrelevant and irrational. Written through the lens of a brilliant and accomplished Wall Street investment banker, Scott invites several gifted religious leaders of Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths to the conversation who offer context and perspective to some of the most challenging claims against the Bible and religion. The research component of this book is so thorough and exhaustive. It could be used as a university textbook but not in an overwhelming sense where a casual, interested reader loses key messages in the details. "In Good Faith" serves a wide audience of diverse faiths and especially those who have either lost their faith or don’t identify with religion. The timing of “In Good Faith” couldn’t be any better and the content couldn’t be any more relevant. It comes at a very important time in our history when our values, beliefs, and faith traditions are being tested and compromised by modern day idolatry.

Great compilation of faith arguments. Super interesting interviews and commentary across religious groups including Jewish, Christian and Muslim leaders

This is a really wonderful book for toddlers! My son absolutely loves the interactive pages that each have a lift-up flap revealing different animals and landscapes. I love this type of book for my son. Not only can I read the story to him, but the pictures are engaging and he can learn lots of new vocabulary words by pointing to all of the illustrations, page by page. The pictures are simple and we'll done in a collage-like-style. Very cute. Even though they aren't overly detailed, they are easily recognizable to a young child starting to learn animal names. The story itself is really quite sweet and my son followed along as I read and pointed to the words. When we finish this story, he turns the book over and wants to read it again and again. We take turns pointing to each little picture and practice saying what they are together. Really great find!

Little owl journies far and wide but ends up at home where she’s happiest. The animals are cute and there are four different landscapes with different animals to look at and each landscape has one big fold-out page to look at. The rhymes aren’t stellar but we talk about the animals more anyway.

Phrases to describe Little Friends: Home Sweet Home: easy, gentle, cute illustrations. I really wanted to like this book, especially since my 1 year-old really seemed to like the artwork and the lift-the-flap action. Each spread is dedicated to a different biome and the animals that live there, and therein lies the problem: in the Arctic environment, there were polar bears AND penguins shown together, which irked me to no end. I will still let my baby play with the book (if I don't donate it to the library first) but I probably will not read it to him again.

Sturdy cardboard book with well constructed flip out flaps that add to the story. My son absolutely loves picking up the flaps and pointing out all the things under them. After a few months it is still one of his favorite books. Very light, vibrant colors and a very brief, easy to read story.

I (and my children) prefer a bit more excitement behind the “lift and flaps”. Under the flaps simply expose a continuance of the same picture. Boring, but cute pictures

My 18 months old boy love these series !! I don't know whether it is the drawings, the colors or the the fact that i sing it to him rather that reading it<3It is amazing I have two books already and I will look for more <3

This is my baby girl's favorite book. She laughs hysterically whenever I pull it out which is the cutest thing ever. We actually had to buy it twice because the first book got a little too much love. The only thing we didn't like about the second book was that the text wasn't in the cute colorful writing.

Beautiful artwork and lovely story for little ones. I bought two, one each for my little one year old grandsons. It's become one of their favorite books!
