Overall I enjoyed the book - the illustrations in particular are amazing (and yes, possibly scary for the under 5 crowd). My only complaint is perhaps what other readers may view as a positive - that the text tries to capture the "Old world" language flare. At times, I found the wording to be unintentionally tongue twisting... not just the choice of words but the rhythm to the sentences - all made it a little rough for this reader the first time through. As examples, try reading aloud:"What!" said Jack's mother."Have you been such a dolt, such an idiot as to give away my Milky-white, the best milker in the parish, for a set of paltry beans? Off with you to bed! And as for your precious beans, here they go out the window."So Jack went upstairs to his little room in the attic, and sad and sorry he was to be sure, as much for his mother's sake as for the loss of his supper.....My only other criticism of the book is that only once does the Ogre give the full recitation of"Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum, I smell the blood of an Enlishman.Be he alive or be he dead, I'll grind his bones to make my bread."Most of the time he only says Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum, or perhaps the rest of the first line. I've read another version that repeats the full verse at least thrice, and by the third reading, all the children are gleefully reciting along with you. So when I read this particular version to my children, I just ad lib that part and read the full verse each time, which the children seem to enjoy.Overall, I'd say the illustrations make the book. Otherwise, the version is a bit too awkwardly worded for me, but others may enjoy that style.

The students love this book. I appreciate having the opportunity to buy it at a price I can afford so students can enjoy a variety of books from various illustrators and authors. So thank you!

i purchased it for my 4 year old grandson thinking the illustrations would be a nicer feature, unfortunately, they were quite hideous and scared my grandson who decided he DID NOT WANT TO READ IT MOMMY!!! my daughter has returned it and i bot a more appropriate version with a nice big friendly looking giant etc. would not recommend this version!

I bought this for my cousins for Christmas because it was one of my favorite books when I was little. I loved the artistic pictures in it but did think it may be a little to graphic for my younger cousins so gave it to my older cousin. It was beautiful but is a paperback and due to the quality of the artwork almost wished it was a hardback.

This is kind of an intense kid's story. Haha. My mom read it to me as a kid and I purchased it to read to my kids not remembering exactly how it went. My son seems to really enjoy it but he's got a pretty big imagination and likes monsters and such.

I never realized what a horrible lesson this book teaches until I bought it for my son. We threw it away.

I loved these books as a kid. But reading it again as an adult to little children suprised me. First off the illustrations can be very scary and the story is boring at points. I realize it's more of a classic take on the story but not the moral I would want to give kids.

The illustrations are very scarily drawn which appealed to the five year old boy I bought it for. The scarier the illustrations and the story, the more he likes it. The giant was one of the ugliest giants I have seen in a Jack and the Beanstalk book. His wife was a horror as well. If your child likes his stories to be ugly and frightening, this is the version for you.

Seven years after his 1979 book "TEX and METAFONT", at the start of a revolution leading to ubiquitous desktop publishing (first Macintosh in 1984), Knuth published a set of five books on TEX, METAFONT, and typefaces. His purpose as teacher was to show a new way to write and document computer programs -- "literate" programming. In these volumes Knuth published two sizeable PASCAL applications for computerized typesetting and -- as a byproduct -- invented a documentation tool, CWEB, that both preserves the textual accuracy of the source code and improves programmer comprehension for debugging and maintenance purposes. The peer review process implied by Knuth's demonstration, his careful attention to the tiniest details, and his gift of the source code to the public domain are all foundations of today's open source community. This is hardly an introductory text on programming and very few of us read computer programs for fun. That said, a programmer with some experience could learn a great deal by thorough study and imitation of the master craftsmen (don't forget about John D. Hobby) at work here.

Gardens of Portugal, by Helena Attlee

Review

One glance at the cover lets you know you're in for a treat. The large format with lush, full page photos does justice to these awe-inspiring gardens. While there seems to be lots of books about French and Italian gardens, the same is by no means true for Portugal. Happily, this delightful book fills that void. Off the beaten track, Portuguese gardens can be enjoyed to the fullest by visitors wishing to avoid the hordes of travelers in other travel hot-spots. This is more than a garden travel book for it presents the fascinating history of the gardens and garden design within the area.Readers will revel in the rare view of paradise offered in these gardens. This title will be enjoyed by arm chair travelers as well as those planning visits to the area. This showcases a total of 21 memorable gardens, most of which are open to the public. --Bella on LineHow many of you know much about the historic gardens of Portugal? Perhaps you have seen a few at Sintra in its unusually favorable climate for trees and hedging. My mental image of them amounted to a few painted tiles behind stone benches and dazzling bougainvilleas between the gardens and hideous, encroaching modernity. I have been completely wrong but it has taken an excellent new book to open my eyes. As its author, Helena Attlee, aptly observes: "Thousands of visitors are drawn to Portugal each year but few of them visit its gardens. Their loss is your gain."... Her Gardens of Portugal is the essential companion, not least because she gives the addresses of the many good gardens open only by appointment. I hope their owners do not live to regret her generous research. --Financial TimesAmong color books I admire the research in Helena Atlee's finely produced 'Gardens of Portugal' a revelation to me at $60 and an incitement to several new holidays. --Financial Times

I have read and own all the Child/Preston books, plus most of their individually-written books, in my personal home library. I've eagerly looked forward to each Child/Preston book as a chance to go on an often strange and always thrilling ride through the past, subterreanea, the supernatural, great horror, wonderful mystery, and more.I'ver enjoyed them all before this one because the richness and intricacy of their character and plot development, especially that of Pendergast, has been superbly crafted and made the books very special and exciting.Sadly, City of Endless Night completely misses the mark in all respects. It is, in essence, boring. Everyone seems to be sleep-walking through the book; there is no energy, even during the climactic action at the end of the book. And D'agosta has gotten colossally dumb somehow for a veteran street cop. This is, without a doubt, the worst book Child/Preston have ever added their name to. Before you criticize, remember, I have in my collection every single one of their volumes both collectively and individually so I think I have the reading creds to back my comments up.Perhaps the worst critique I can offer is that for the very first time with a Child/Preston book, I could not remember what was happening as I picked up the book again to continue reading. It seems I just did not care enough to vividly remember the story.I strongly suspect this was ghost-written like more and more authors are doing today. I just cannot believe that my contemporary literary idols Child and Preston, who individually now write such exciting and fascinating books, could have collaborated on this colossal waste of time and money.I shall investigate much deeper, and avoid pre-ordering before I plunk down my hard-earned loot for another Child/Preston book. From here on, if you want to read some still exciting page-turning books in the same vein, I highly recommend James Rollins as your author of choice. Rollins still writes like Child/Preston used to.Note to Child and Preston - I hope you get back on the roller coaster/scary house thrill ride you used to provide with your next (if there is one) book. I'm a devoted fan who would like to be able to believe in you again.

I've been a Preston & Child fan since "Cabinet of Curiosities." City of Endless Night does not even read like their work. Pendergast is somnolent--when he bothers to involve himself at all. The cops make stupid assumptions and mistakes--so out of character! Pages upon pages spent on a stupid chase, and the plot is juvenile with gratuitous violence. I spent over $15 for an ebook copy and it was money wasted. It's sad when you follow the work of two great authors only to see them deteriorate over time. The last few books have been awful and this one is the worst.

City of Endless Night is Preston and Child's 16th Agent Pendergast book and I have read them all at least twice. In most of them, the authors answer, in a Q & A section, the inquiry of whether their books have to read in order, or can they stand alone? I seem to recall that they recommend some books to be read in order, but they generally aim for the stories to stand on their own, independent merits. Well, I have to say, for the first time, that this has not happened. City of Endless Night is the first Pendergast novel that seems to be sketchily, hastily written, with flat characters, more than a little predictability—and it's just plain...dull. There are no hints of the bizarre and sometimes supernatural touches this time around—it's a straight murder mystery. Pendergast appears bored and listless and comes up with little that's new, prompting NY detective Vincent D'Agosta to exclaim over and over “Typical Pendergast! Classic Pendergast!” because it's the same old bag of tricks. D'Agosta himself is frustrated and angry from the first page to the last, quickly becoming tiresome and falling too easily into the killer's trap. None of the victims are likable—in fact, pompous New York Post reporter Bryce Harriman writes in several articles that they deserved to die! A silly subplot about a penniless preacher who's determined to save the sinners in a Central Park demonstration (already done in Pendergast #5, Brimstone) goes nowhere. At least we are spared the cold, insufferably snobbish presence of Constance Greene this time around, but if you haven't read the previous Pendergast books, parts of City of Endless Night will not make sense, and if this is your first Pendergast novel, there's likely nothing in it that will inspire readers to backtrack and explore the previous 15.

I have read every one of Preston and Child's Pendergast series. And while I have not always agreed with their direction (the silly, almost childishly slapstick murder of William Smithback) I have always enjoyed the books. Not every book in the series qualifies as one you cannot put down, but enough of them do to keep me coming back for more. While City of Endless night is not horrible, it simply seems not to be the authors' best effort. The pace is slow and halting through much of it, and even the endgame chase is not what I would call a page-turner. I was interrupted right in the middle of Pendergast's final battle with the villain and, rather than holding up a finger to plead for another moment in which to finish the chapter I found myself more than capable of putting the book down. Will I read the next Pendergast novel? Most assuredly. Will I be hoping and praying that the authors take some time to rediscover what has made this a beloved series, and perhaps rekindle their own excitement in the project so we avoid another lackluster effort? Definitely.

I agree with the other reviews. It was just lacking and not up to par. The ending was not believable. The sub plots so so. The epilogue was excellent. All in all, disappointing

A very weak effort.it was a disappointment after much anticipation. Not much of a plot.

Ontology Matching

From the Back Cover

Ontologies tend to be found everywhere. They are viewed as the silver bullet for many applications, such as database integration, peer-to-peer systems, e-commerce, semantic web services, or social networks. However, in open or evolving systems, such as the semantic web, different parties would, in general, adopt different ontologies. Thus, merely using ontologies, like using XML, does not reduce heterogeneity: it just raises heterogeneity problems to a higher level.Euzenat and Shvaiko’s book is devoted to ontology matching as a solution to the semantic heterogeneity problem faced by computer systems. Ontology matching aims at finding correspondences between semantically related entities of different ontologies. These correspondences may stand for equivalence as well as other relations, such as consequence, subsumption, or disjointness, between ontology entities. Many different matching solutions have been proposed so far from various viewpoints, e.g., databases, information systems, and artificial intelligence. The second edition of Ontology Matching has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect the most recent advances in this quickly developing area, which resulted in more than 150 pages of new content. In particular, the book includes a new chapter dedicated to the methodology for performing ontology matching. It also covers emerging topics, such as data interlinking, ontology partitioning and pruning, context-based matching, matcher tuning, alignment debugging, and user involvement in matching, to mention a few. More than 100 state-of-the-art matching systems and frameworks were reviewed. With Ontology Matching, researchers and practitioners will find a reference book that presents currently available work in a uniform framework. In particular, the work and the techniques presented in this book can be equally applied to database schema matching, catalog integration, XML schema matching and other related problems. The objectives of the book include presenting (i) the state of the art and (ii) the latest research results in ontology matching by providing a systematic and detailed account of matching techniques and matching systems from theoretical, practical and application perspectives.

This is a difficult one to review. What I don't like, it is old and portrays dated views on trees. What I do like, it is old and portrays dated view on trees! I wish someone would write a modern version of this book and expand on all we know about trees now. No disrespect intended for the author! We just think about trees differently now than in the past.

How horribly unfair for an earlier reviewer to give this book one star simply because it is an abridged version. Think of how many people will see that review and choose not to read what may be the most perfect book for neophyte dendrologists ever written! Nor is the book for inexperienced tree aficionados only. Even experts will be well served by the books beautiful prose and unabashed emotion, even if only reminds them how best to inspire a love of trees in their students. I already know the Latin names of all the eastern trees in the book, and know how to identify each species by sight. Nonetheless, I was thrilled by the historical information in the descriptions, and was actually moved to tears by Peattie's description of what we have lost and will continue to lose as these trees disappear from our forests. Each specie's unique characteristics are concisely described in the book, but each tree's character is lovingly explained, as well. Peattie writes so beautifully that you cannot help but be moved - and perhaps forever changed - by reading his descriptions. This book will make you gasp with wonder, stun you into speechlessness, make you laugh aloud with sheer joy, and probably move you to tears more than once. The few short pages about the Beech tree, for example, describe its characteristic bark and form, and explain how colonists knew a beech tree indicated good soil for planting crops. This is standard information, but how many field guides exclaim over the "gleam of its wondrously smooth bark," or remind us that the famous Beech carved into by Daniel Boone began its life fifty years before Shakespeare? You don't need any prior knowledge of silviculture or dendrology to learn from and love this volume. Field Guides may help you to distinguish between a red oak and a black oak, but no other book will make you fall in love with a tree. In fact, all the guidebooks in the world fail to do what this book does effortlessly and beautifully: turn your appreciation for trees into an educated passion for each and every tree in your backyard and beyond. I promise you will not regret reading this book; I virtually guarantee you will read it again and again. I only wish I could thank the author personally for the gift of this perfect book.

This is an absolutely enchanting book, necessary reading, which I am going through very slowly and with great enjoyment. However, on my copy, p. 170 is followed by pages 168 and 169. Please ALERT the publisher, in case other copies have this same printer's error.

Engrossing reading by one of the finest nature and science writers of the 20th century. Peattie includes captivating stories from other fields such as US history.

A Real classic. Well-narrated. I've read the book years ago, but the audio gives it a whole other dimension. This was highly recommended by a client of mine who has a high-end furniture making business. He's had his whole staff listen to the 6-7 chapters that describe the woods they use in their furniture.

Tops

This book soars! Beattie is gifted with the imagination and background to bring trees to life. He sets them in context with historical and amusing antidotes. Paul Landacre's illustrations are beautiful and very helpful. Keep this book near hand and dip into it for lovely stories on your favorite trees. Beattie is unsurpassed for nature writing!

Managing Humans: Biting and Humorous Tales of a Software Engineering Manager

Review

“I can very warmly recommend this book to anyone who already works in a software engineering management position--whatever level--or who thinks about a career in this direction. It will be entertaining for software engineers as well, at least for understanding how these management beings think and why they might do what they are doing. … Finally, it will be a fun read for anyone who has just some vague understanding of this management thing.” (Frank Pospiech, Computing Reviews, February, 2017)“The book is a witty, hilarious, and insightful look into what it takes to manage people in a software engineering firm. … this is a great book for managers in any arena, but especially those who work in software engineering. It provides a comprehensive set of tools in the form of bite-sized chapters that can help any manager improve her relationships with subordinates. Summing Up: Highly recommended. General readers through professionals.” (A. Dantes, Choice, Vol. 54 (5), January, 2017)

I was re-reading edition 2 of this book and got halfway through. Realized there was a third edition and went back and re-read the new one. There isn't a huge difference and there's a ton of value to be mined with either version but the new one has several new chapters - including one that was very much worth it.No matter where you are in your career, read this book. As an employee, you'll understand your boss and other teams. As a leader, you'll understand your role a little better and probably pick a few nuggets up.

With a title like "...biting and humorous..." I was expecting to enjoy reading this book. Instead it felt like a chore with very few actual insights, and mostly attempts at cleverness where humor was intended.Once in a while you come across a quote where someone was able to cut through to the essence of a thing, and you're struck by the simplicity and utility of the author's statement or observation. Most of my favorite books on software are filled with such quotes. Lopp introduces an entire zoo of his own terms to describe commonly encountered personalities, situations, interactions, etc. Besides being a lot to remember, most of his classifications and rules are fairly simple, but just don't strike me as zeroing in on something fundamental.Maybe other readers will come away with a different impression. I really wanted to like this book.

I read this book during my last semester as a Computer Information Systems student, as it was a choice on the list of required reading for the capstone class. I'm so glad I chose this one--it's some of the best, most coherent information I've ever read on how to balance the worlds of tech and business properly. It's a witty, insightful look into the way that people actually think and operate. I found myself saying "YES! Finally, someone has vocalized my thinking process!" at several times during the book. Not only that, but there are sections where Mr. Lopp lays out the expectations that the "other side" will have of you, the employee. There's a handy section on resumes (yes, I know, there are supposed to be accents over those Es, but I do not know the keyboard codes for them) and what a manager ACTUALLY looks at on them. There's a section on how to gracefully leave your job, because that WILL happen.Basically, I recommend this book for ANYONE who's making the transition from student to professional.

A lot of reviews for this work have been posted here already, including a few which puzzlingly complain about the substance of what Michael Lopp has to share, even though the subtitle of "Managing Humans" contains the phrase "Biting and Humorous Tales". While Joel Spolsky, cofounder and CEO of Fog Creek Software, is quoted on the back cover as saying that this is "by far the most brilliant book about managing software teams you're ever going to find", I would argue that in my opinion this is by far the most witty book about managing software teams. The content that the author provides focuses on some of his personal experiences, the bulk of which were taken from previous contributions to his "randsinrepose" weblog, and abides by his premise to a T, which is to not offer a traditional management book based on the idea that there is a science behind management, but a witty book about how managers, "a strange breed of people who through a mystical organizational ritual have been given power over your future and your bank account", learn by doing. At the same time, the reader should not expect this book to explain the hows - it is simply about the software engineering management experiences of one individual and some of the insights he has gained along the way. Despite the fact that much of the content here consists of a wide variety of topics, sometimes seemingly random, for readers seeking more traditional content chapters 27-30 entitled "Incrementalists and Completionists", "Organics and Mechanics", "Inwards, Outwards, and Holistics", and "Free Electrons" provide some valuable content that is reminiscent of Frederick P. Brooks, Jr.'s "The Mythical Man-Month" chapter 3 entitled "The Surgical Team" (see my earlier review). In these chapters, Lopp takes a break from his customary humor and looks at some of the different work styles and associated personalities in this field. After a while, any successful professional will undoubtedly begin to figure out some of the traits possessed by colleagues, but Lopp does the best job that I have seen to provide some broad brushstrokes to help even those in the profession who are no longer neophytes; if anything, this portion of the book will serve as a second take into how professionals might approach different scenarios based on the individuals involved. This book is a quick read and recommended to anyone in the software engineering field willing to take a break for some humor about their own profession, and interested in hearing some life lessons provided by an individual who is not afraid to talk about himself.

Managing Humans is Michael Lopp's entree into blog-turned-book style that seems to be increasingly popular these days. And while the content from [...] has been edited and tweaked, a few reviewers have mentioned that it needs a bit more polish; I would agree. While it has an amazing amount of insight into relevant issues delivered with surprising certainty, there isn't research, a philosophical premise, or numbers to back it up, only anecdotes that, while believable, are admittedly created for purpose. Lopp doesn't equivocate, and he doesn't present his views within the context of a greater argument or philosophy. As such, the book reads like a monologue about software companies from a drunk friend who you don't always see eye-to-eye with.In this regard, the book is simultaneously annoying and stimulating. If you can stomach a point of view not frequently written in, and a blatantly unapologetic tone, it's worth the read. There are nuggets of wisdom to be found, but they are buried so deeply within the anecdotes, I found myself forgetting them after a few chapters.I really wanted to like this book more, but it lacked a coherence that I may have mistakenly been expecting. Too bad there aren't half star ratings - 3 is a little short, but will have to do.
