I've bought a number of copies of this book as gifts. 30 years ago, one of my son's teachers recommended I look into this diet. My son did well in school, but often spoke out of turn, had trouble focusing, and was easily distracted. I would not consider drugs, was already into healthy eating and was blessed with a kid who was not picky about what he ate. Yes, it took a fair amount of effort in the beginning, but as with any diet, once you know what to look for, it's easy. ONE WEEK later, his teacher phoned me and said, "What has happened to Travis? He's a different kid, no problems with focus, and just delightful in class." I have become a convert! I've seen kids and grandkids of friends give this a try and see dramatic results. These are children who come home crying from school because they are trying so hard but still struggling. I'm hearing of results right now with the friend for whom I bought this latest book. Her grandson is not hyperactive in the classic sense in terms of over activity, but has some dyslexia. BIG change and he is so happy. This is no cure all for all children, but PLEASE try it.

I first read this book back in the 80's. It is an even more important book today because there are a LOT more additives, preservatives, coloring's in food today than there were back then.We put in practice the recommendations in this book, and within a month his teachers asked what we did because he was attentive in class and no longer disruptive. PLUS all of his grades went UP!!!The philosophy explained in this book is even more helpful today because there are exponentially more additives, preservatives, coloring in the food today, thus causing a spike in the number of children diagnosed with ADD & ADHD and worst of all put on toxic pharmaceutical drugs!!!!IF you follow this protocol EXACTLY it should allow you to, in time, stop the drugs needed to control ADD & ADHD and have your calmer and more attentive child back again. The following essential oils, when used properly, should help too:Vetiver (the most helpful)LavenderCedarwoodMarjoramRoman ChamomileClary Sage

I read this book as one of my kids was diagnosed with ADHD. The book is eye opening: especially the description of the study on the effect of colorants on flies. The author is very down to Earth, he supports very well most of his assertions, and it really shows where the evil is. Given that colorants and food are not necessarily the cause of all "mental disabilities", Dr. Feingold is able to point out how diet can really affect one person future. I strongly recommend this book. As for a practical solution: I believe the parent should adapt Dr. Feinglod message to the personal reality of its family. It definitely helps getting kids out of the hole.

I have a child who is ADD. This book changed our lives. It made it possible for her to do well in school. To have friends and a normal life.

Feingold jumped the fence of scientific journals, which only a select few read, and shared his wonderful discovery with the rest of us. In this book he explains how he discovered that food additives and the natural element salicylate can cause life changing reactions in some people. Attention Deficit Disorder is commonly traced to these factors, as well as other personality disorders. But when the whole family uses the diet it isn't unusual to find that it benefits even those who do not have the most severe reaction to these elements. The book lists foods that contain salicylates and gives recipes and menu ideas to make it easy to transition to a pure foods, salicylate free diet. Expect a withdrawal period of 3 to 4 days, then sweet calm for as long as the diet is kept.

I used this book MANY years ago for one of my kids, and HIGHLY recommend to anyone wanting to avoid drugs for your child. Mine was in a self contained special ed classroom with 15 other kids... all on medication, and ONLY mine was able to mainstream into regular classes.

Dr. Feingold was a compassionate and dedicated researcher who proved decisively that ADHD is caused by an adverse reaction in the brain to chemical additives. And if you look at his list of symptoms on pp. 49-50, you'll find that many of them are now labeled autistic. So if your child has been diagnosed with ADHD or autism, I urge you to clean up his diet. And if she is on medication for either condition, I urge you to find a competent physician (i.e., one who did not prescribe the drug) and get her off of it. Virtually all ADHD medications are form of speed, which is addictive, so it will take at least 4 weeks for your child's body to safely withdraw.I'm a former teacher and I hate to see children drugged unnecessarily. This book will give you the ammunition you need to get your child the care he needs.

This really does help if you follow the directions. .the outcomes for the child is more than very rewarding. It truly does help them. I have followed this for myself at times also.

He’s Not Lazy offers both parents and professionals a grounded, insightful perspective on adolescent males, particularly those who appear to “opt out” of achievement and/or engagement. With a respectful, sometimes humorous, and always intelligent voice, Dr. Price investigates factors underlying underachievement. Integrating current research about adolescent brain development and behavior, he paints a clear picture of the cognitive, physiological, emotional, and social changes unfolding in the male teen. Based on objective data as well as years of clinical experience and parenting, he provides concrete interventions for parents to respond skillfully to their sons’ behaviors as well as the emotional reactions that arise within parents themselves. He’s Not Lazy is an essential guide for parents and professionals (teacher, psychotherapists, counselors).

This book is so incredibly relevant for our family. It addresses the reasons behind why bright boys sometimes "opt out" or underachieve. It also explains some of the psychological reasons why some of us "over parent' our kids. So I realized that in trying to help my son, I am actually making it harder for him to become independent and self motivated. I personally felt that this was one of the most spot on, and incredibly relevant parenting books I have ever read. It addresses head on what we are dealing with and gives a fresh and compassionate perspective on what motivates our son's behavior. Highly, highly recommend.

First of all, I haven't finished this book yet. However, as I was reading the introduction, I got already convinced that this book is going to be a great tool for me. And then as I got more immersed in the author's concise, practical and empathetic writing, I couldn't help but grab my phone and open Amazon's app to provide my very premature but very honest review.I don't have one, but two teenage boys, and they are only one year apart but, I ordered this book with my oldest son in mind.Honestly, I never thought that having the amazing opportunity of witnessing the transition of my son becoming an adult was going to drive me crazy, to make me doubt myself in one year more than I have during my whole life, to make me want to give up, run away and hide for the next 10 years. Because, parenting teenagers, is really challenging and frustrating sometimes :( . And I know everybody can say that but no one will truly realize it until one day their sweet babies are transforming into saucy teenagers!!I have read several books about teenagers and parenting but this book has greatly surprised me so far. It is so simple but oh so real and raw and sincere and compassionate that I already know I will read it more than once. This book is a huge ray of hope for me, there's a saying that goes: "it takes a village to raise a child" but, to raise a teenager it surely takes more than just a village, well, this book for me has become all that. I am not sure how I found it but I am really grateful I decided to buy it when I needed it the most.I wish teachers and counselors would also read it, in fact I think I'll buy some for my sons' teachers 😇

As a parent and college educator, I not only recommend this book for every parent of an adolescent boy (and girls too), but to every middle school and high school teacher. I learned so much and found so much wisdom that will give insight into the behavior of our ambivalent learners, and provide tools for helping them to succeed. I will recommend it not only to my parent and teacher friends, but to my students who will be parents and teachers in the near future.

This is one of the best parenting books I've ever read. It's relatable, easy to read and provides suggestions that are realistic and doable to change the course of parenting a teen or preteen boy who's not into school. It provides insight on the psychology behind both teen and parent behavior, not only related to school, but also the changing dynamics as boys mature. It's exactly what my husband and I needed as our boys enter the teen years. It's almost like the author wrote it specifically for us - his insight to what's going with my son and our parenting on was spot on. I recommend this book both for its insight on lackluster effort at school as well as how to understand a teen boy in general, and what parents need to do.

An extremely well written and compelling guide for parents who struggle with how to motivate their teenage sons to do better in school and in life. He's Not Lazy is full of practical advice and actionable strategies which are based on both empirical research and extensive clinical experience. It is illuminated by the kind, loving and creative voice of the author. All the while the book helps you maintain or even improve your relationship with your kid. As Price shows--with a rare combination of common sense and originality--the first step in implementing the plan he lays out in the book is to change your own perspective a as parent. For that reason, as well as the updated research on brain development and the penetrating insights it offers into adolescent psychology, this book is also a must read for anyone working with or trying to understand and motivate teenagers. It is a fascinating, moving and accessible read with many, inspiring, real-life stories.

Best book evah! It clearly helps you understand your ADHD boy and why he “opts out” of schoolwork, seems unmotivated, and not the son you used to know. It gives recommendations and suggestions on how to deal with this and strategies to help you succeed in your relationship with your child and help him succeed during teen years.

The questions of parents throughout & appendix of worksheets / tools are worth the read.I took this with a broader view than academics - more about how we reinforce autonomy in life & children’s self esteem.

The advice is stuff that can be useful for memorizing a speech, or a list, but for remembering what a book said, and then being able to apply it and connect it I've found distributed review where I answer a set of questions I wrote out repeatedly over a period of weeks works much better. There were a few useful ideas in there, but it isn't very practical in most contexts. Also I think the smaller decline in performance of older Asians relative to white Americans has a lot more to do with priming than any real difference in memory declines.

Excellent book.

book is much too oriented to professionals. Some of it is applicable to adults who are interested as lay-persons to learn about memory function, but too detailed.Sorry

There have been several books published about memory and maintaining memory skills but this book is notable in its comprehensive look at the various facets of memory and how aging affects them. The book's first five chapters evaluate the current science of memory and explain how people use memory. Thereafter the book provides guidance on how one can work to improve memory in certain areas and develop strategies to cope with those natural impairments to memory that develop as a person ages. This book is very well written and notable for its optimistic outlook and lack of egotistical hype.

Professors Einstein and McDaniel, in their easy-to-read guide to "memory fitness," debunk the myth that growing old means that one's memory is certain to decline significantly. The book guides readers through understandable explanations of how our memories work, and the changes to expect. Best, strategies are offered to improve our memories, with emphasis on mental activity as well as physical exercise. Most practical and satisfying are the many graphic demonstrations throughout the chapters which allow the reader to understand how his or her own memory is working.Older adults should own this book, even if nothing else is learned, just to review the "cues" which one can use to serve as reminders to remember something. Younger adults need this book to complete a comprehensive approach to general fitness.Though I have owned a computer for 22 years, I thought, at 76, that my brain's "hard drive" was too full to tackle much more data. Einstein and McDaniel's book has convinced me that there is room for much, much more. So, this year I've learned 130 new square dance steps.MEMORY FITNESS: A GUIDE FOR SUCCESSFUL AGING will help you too.

Dr. Einstein was my Memory and Cognition professor and when I found out that he wrote a book, I decided to buy the book for my own information and for my parents to see it, if they so desired. I found the book to be not only a wonderful overview and recap of things that we learned in class, but also a great asset for everyone as they gain wisdom and years. People give up hope and expect to have increasing memory problems with age, but they don't imagine what they could do to help themselves beyond the use of post-it notes. I highly recommend this book!
