This wonderful book is, at its core, about how MUSIC can be a bridge and a bond among all people around the world! Terry Hamilton takes you on his personal journey as a young man who was a four-year member of an exceptional music group that traveled and performed locally and internationally to share the joy of music. In his book, Terry explained that the group of young adults (and “young ambassadors” while traveling abroad) was known as The Southern California Youth Chorale (SCYC), founded and directed by Mr. K. Gene Simmonds, which existed between 1965 and 1978. Terry expounds on Mr. Simmonds’ brilliance and passion to have music be a joyful connection among all people. As an alum of SCYC, I loved reading Terry’s story and found myself laughing and nodding in agreement with several things that he shared because I felt the same way or experienced a similar situation while I was a member! I also tried to read Terry’s book as if I was NOT an alum of SCYC, and I believe everyone will enjoy this book because you will feel as if you are taking Terry’s journey along with him! Extra bonuses in this book (for alumni and non-alumni) include stories from several other SCYC alums, as well. It was marvelous to read the experiences that other members shared. Additionally, Terry included many photos of Mr. Simmonds and of the group through the years, including formal group shots, performance pictures, and candid photos of members. As I read Terry’s book, thoroughly enjoying his first-hand story, it brought to mind my own treasured memories of being an honored alum of SCYC. Reading Terry’s book: I was hanging on every word with delight! Applause! Applause!

While society and culture has changed, the power of choral music has not. Singing together gathers the participants to be as one with the music, providing a healing, wholesome, and uplifting experience unmatched by any other experience. Mr. Hamilton recounts his and others years with the Southern California Youth Chorale and reflects on the positive impact it has had throughout his life. The rehearsals with Mr. K. Gene Simmonds provided structure, music education, lessons in literature and history, and an expectation of excellence, resulting in such close camaraderie that all who have had the privilege of singing under his baton will truly understand. I hope that this book will inspire music educators and choral conductors to take a step of faith, assemble a choir of talented and willing- to- be disciplined young people, and give them an experience that will last a lifetime.

I just got my copy of the book and have to thank Terry Hamilton for putting this together for others to enjoy. It stirred memories of my years (1969 & 1972) with the choir while reading the story of how it all began. There are many things shared by various members reminding me of how our lives were changed thanks to our gifted director, K. Gene Simmonds. There is so much to see in this world and using music as a tool to share as we traveled is a treasure. It was great to read of the author's accounts from his trips abroad. This truly was an experience that lasted a lifetime! Well done!

This book brought back so many memories of my 1971 trip with SCYC that I was emotional throughout reading. Terry"s amazing memory and artifacts from the audition and trip/s were inspiring. K Gene changed everyone who had the privilege of singing for him. He set an extremely high standard for my future directors and conductors, and he instilled fabulous choral habits that I embody to this day. This book is, of course, is fantastic for alumni to read, but would be perfect for anyone interested in choral music during this time period. It is a sweet piece of choral history that can be savored by all.

I just loved reading this account of singing and traveling with the Southern California Youth Chorale, conducted by K. Gene Simmons. It brought back so many memories of our once in a lifetime experiences. Excellent singing, hard work and friendship. Good Read.

Do you want a clearer picture of what some of the youth of Southern California were doing from 1965 to the mid 70s? With pictures, stories, and tributes, this inspiring book by Terry Hamilton will give you insight into a great man, K. Gene Simmonds, and the youth he led through Europe and Asia as ambassadors of good-will from America. A choir of the highest musical standards, the Southern California Youth Chorale showed the world an America at its best and gave each youth participating the experience of a lifetime.

What a wonderful way to learn the history of the turbulent 1960s and 1970s through the personal experience of a member of the Southern California Youth Chorale. Through the joys and difficulties of the author's personal life, you can see the duality of purpose in his writings: an autobiography and a history lesson all in one. This story is not to be missed if you want to see the happiness of a difficult era and the maturation of a young man on life's journey to adulthood.

Praise for Good Poems for Hard Times"If I could choose only one book to give every inhabitant of post-Katrina New Orleans, it would be Garrison Keillor's remarkable and wide-ranging collection of Good Poems for Hard Times. This is a wonderful collection which I own in hardback. I love it so much I purchased the E-Book as well.UNFORTUNATELY I am extremely disappointed in the E-Book. It does not have a FULL TABLE OF CONTENTS. It only has section headings which make it impossible to browse poems or poets and read individual poems. This defect IMO makes the ebook useless and I have returned it for a refund.I should also point out that the companion book - Good Poems for Hard Times does not have this defect. Each poem is listed by name in it's Table of Contents, but does not include the poet name as part of that entry.

What a trove this book is. You might think "What does humorist Garrison Keillor know about poetry?" Quite a lot, it turns out. This is a wonderful anthology of poetry especially for anyone discovering poetry for the first time or rediscovering poetry after a bad high school English experience. Most of the poems in this volume are quite accessible.Keillor chose his poems from the past as well as the present but with the selections skewed more toward contemporary poets. I found many gems: all the poems by Raymond Carver and Charles Bukowski are oustanding, "Poem to be Read at 3 A.M." by Donald Justice, "He Wishes for the Clothes of Heaven" by Yeats, "Sonnet XLIII" by Millay, "The Music One Looks Back On" by Stephen Dobyns, and "Bison Crossing Near Mt. Rushmore" by May Swenson are some of my very favorites in this thick volume. I read only a few poems at a time, so this book took me more than 5 months to read.As with any anthology, I found a few poems I didn't like: "Piano" by D.H. Lawrence, "Sweater Weather" by Sharon Bryan, "Year's End" by Richard Wilbur, and "Lazy" by David Lee were among the few poems I thought were bad. And I'm still struggling to like anything by Dickinson. Keillor includes several of her poems. There are a couple of minor miscues in the book. For some reason, Keillor left out biographies for Robert Kinsley and H. W. Longfellow. And one poem - "Sir Patrick Spens" - was much shorter in "Good Poems" than it is in another volume of poetry that I have. This makes me question the editing of other poems in the volume.I can highly recommend this book of poems. There is something in it for all readers of poetry. Be sure to read the bios as you go; they provide useful back story to what you are reading. One word of caution: the Kindle version of this book is terrible. Don't waste your money; be sure to read a paper copy.

For years I have kept a hardcover copy in my car, and instead of listening to the radio on the way to work I would begin by opening the book at random and reading a poem before I left the driveway. Then I would think about the poem on the twenty-minute drive to work. Now I also have it on my iPad. Although there are many great poems that are not in this book, all the poems are very good.

Garrison Keillor continues in his quest to bring poetry to the man and woman on the street in this his third collection of poems "as heard on the Writer's Almanac." Certainly he is to be commended for being the one individual who has done more than anyone else-- with the possible exception of perhaps Bill Collins--to bring new poetry converts into his church. Many is the time that I have sat in my car, having arrived at my destination before Mr. Keiller has finished his poem for the day in that immediately recognizable soothing voice of his, to get a fix for the day from his reading. (And sometimes I have ordered an obscure volume of poetry from an unknown poet he has just read, only to discover that too often Mr. K. has read the best poem in the collection!)No amateur with words, himself, Mr. Keillor writes a decent introduction about his childhood in Minnesota, family travels, and how grade school teachers ruin poetry for our youth. "Americans are impatient with riddles and so they give poetry a wide berth, knowing from Miss Fernwood's 8th grade English class that a page of writing with an uneven right margin means a series of jokes with no punch lines, a puzzle with no right answers." Too often poets whom Keillor describes as "upward-striving" write about Europe, but not the writers he has selected in this collection of over 260 poems. He gives a whole laundry list of subjects that these poems write about, purely American, and Europe be damned.Mr. Keillor includes a lot of poems from poets I know and like: Wendell Berry, Robert Bly, Charles Bukowski, Raymond Carver, Billy Collins, Stephen Dunn, Allen Ginsberg, Donald Hall, Robinson Jeffers, Galway Kinnell, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Grace Paley, Kenneth Rexroth, Theodore Roethke, W. D. Snodgdrass, Gary Snyder, William Stafford, John Updike, James Tate, Marge Percy, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Sara Teasdale, May Sarton, Donald Justice, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Carlos Williams, Anne Sexton, Dana Gioia--and of course the father and mother of twentieth century American poetry, Mr. Whitman and Ms. Dickinson. Mr. Keiller even includes Johnny Cash for his "Folsom Prison Blues." (I cannot imagine, however, hearing anyone read this poem rather than sing it.)There are even more poets I've never heard of in this big collection in praise of America. My two favorites are from poets previously unknown to me: The first is "Bridal Shower" by George Bilgere, a poem that resonated with me to the 12th power. I suspect others feel just as strongly about people who talk on cell phones in public. Here is the poem in its entirety.Perhaps in a distant café,Four or five people are talkingWith the four or five peopleWho are chatting on their cell phones this morningIn my favorite café.And perhaps someone there,Someone like me, is watching them as they frown,Or smile, or shrugAt their invisible friends or lovers,Jabbing the air for emphasis. And, like me, he misses the old days,When talking to yourselfMeant you were crazy,Back when being crazy was a big deal. Not just an acronymOr something you could take a pill for.I liked itWhen people who were talking to themselves might actually have been talking to God or an angel. You respected people like that. You didn't want to kill them,As I want to kill the woman at the next tableWith the little blue light on her earWho has been telling the emptiness in front of herAbout her daughter's bridal showerIn astonishing detailFor the past thirty minutes.O person like mePhoneless in your distant cafe,I wish we could meet to discuss this,And perhaps you would help meMurder this woman on her cell phone,After which we could have a cup of coffee,Maybe a bagel, and talk to each other,Face to face. The second poem, from a section named "Never Expected To Be There" is on a totally different subject, one that will tear your heart out, "Meadowbrook Nursing Home" by Alice N. Persons. The narrator of the poem takes her cat Lucy, who is fifteen and "getting creaky herself," to visit Mrs. Harris in a nursing home. Mrs. Harris speaks:"I had a cat called Lily--she was so pretty, all white. She was with me for twenty years, after my husband died too.She slept with me every night--I loved her very much. It's hard, in here, since I can't get around."Lucy was settling in on the bed."You won't believe it, but I used to love to dance.I was a fool for it! I even won contests.I wish I had danced more. It's funny, what you miss when everything. . . . . is gone."This last was a murmur. She'd fallen asleep. The narrator then goes home and dances to Tina Turner. This poem, to paraphrase Mr. Keillor in describing Emily Dickinson's poetry in his first collection of poems GOOD POEMS, will take your head off.Thank you, Mr. Keillor, for another fine collection of poems with something for everyone.

I was recommended this book from a Reddit post. I really like this collection of poems. They are thoughtful, deep, and sad but often from poets I don't know. It's a great companion to have on a sad day.

This book opened a door for me and for that I am very grateful. As other reviewers have stated it isn't a collection for the highbrow connoisseur but I can't believe anyone would regret having it on the shelf. Keillor's introduction is a fun and rewarding read in itself, he has always done a great job of bringing "culture" to the masses and in the introduction he does an admirable job of explaining why poetry can be appreciated by ANYONE.This book offers up a variety of poets like Emily Dickinson, Howard Nemerov, Yeats, Billy Collins and more to the uninitiated reader in a way that makes you want to read more of their work. Keillor treads the line between urbane sophist and common man with wit and humility.

Were you aware that Modern States has sponsored a website called "first year free" where you can teach, and then CLEP your son or daughter out of their entire first year of college? College "general education requirements" are the biggest rip-off on the face of the planet. You're essentially paying these colleges $22,000 to $68,000 dollars per year to REPEAT high school, and at a level which isn't significantly more rigorous than what your kid will learn in an average honors class. Worse, universities these days are a mess ... you'll mortgage your house and go into debt, only to have your kid come back spouting nonsense. If your kid is still in high school, buy this book, enroll YOURSELF at Modern States for free alongside your kid, and then use this book to update their excellent online classes to the 2019 CLEP exam since it changes every year, and these are the latest test-questions. Buy this book for $25, spend $87 per subject to help your kid "CLEP" out of the first year of college, and save yourself a bundle.MY teenager is in 11th grade and has already CLEP'd out of 3 of her 10 college classes, and has passed another 2 full-fledged college classes by taking advantage of her high school's "dual enrollment" program at our local university. Right now, she's studying to pass the DSST (formerly DANTES) exam in an upper-level subject, another set of tests similar to CLEP which has second-year classes. Don't get ripped off. Buy this book. Push your kid that wee bit extra when studying, and then the moment they pass their classes each term, drag them down to the CLEP or DANTES test center and "test them out of" those college classes.

They call this a study guide, but in reality it’s a book of tests with an answer key. I had something more narrative in mind reading the word “study guide.” True, I’ll be able to pass the tests after boning up on the answers, just be aware of what you’re getting.

This is not at all a study guide. It is an overview of the topics that will be covered for each exam along with a practice test. That said, it is good to have to give one additional practice, but you will be incredibly disappointed if you think you're buying something that will explain the material in the least.

Has study material for lots of Cleps so you don’t have to purchase several books!

Modern States online has the exact same questions in this book on their website for you to practice... word for word. I just realized that now, unfortunately it's too late for me to return the book.

Definitely handy!

Good prep

Came on time . Great book
