On the plus side, it's all five books in one volume. However, in "Life, the Universe, and Everything" and "So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish," the text has been edited to be more "American," and a number of the jokes are gone altogether (e.g. The Rory award is no longer for the gratuitous use of the word "Belgium" in a screenplay; it's for the gratuitous use of the word "f***" in a screenplay). Won't be noticed by anyone who has never read the series, but I hate the editing changes as I know what used to be there!

Douglas Adams was my first introduction to British humor. As a kid that grew up in rural MO during the pre-internet era, this book was one of the first indications I had that the world outside my little cow-filled bubble was a much bigger place than the simple folk around me were letting on. I came back to Hitchhiker's Guide when I was a homesick 20-something in Denmark, acclimating to an entirely new environment, new language, and new life. Most recently, I picked up this copy prior to my 42nd birthday. There are lots of changes happening now and things really seem to be coming together. I can't help but wonder at the timing. You sass? Clever, insightful, and maybe even revelatory in the most absurd way, The Guide is a timeless space adventure that has helped me find my own place in the universe.

If you are going to read the complete “Hitchhiker” series then I recommend buying “The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” as it contains all five of the books in the series. Having them in one volume encourages you to read them soon after each other, and I think that enhances the experience. The collection also contains the horrid story “Young Zaphod Plays It Safe” and it is a waste of space in the text. But, that is a small quibble, and the story is short.I enjoyed the series, mostly, and I would recommend it to certain readers. For more specifics see below where you will find my review for all five of the novels in chronological order.1. “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” is short and never gives much development (character or plot) but it seems appropriate for this tale. The novel reminds me a lot of Vonnegut in its style and presentation. Short chapters and biting satire mixed with fantastical plot devices. And it all works! The introduction and first chapter of this novel are funny and pull you into the book. There are moments that are so clever and witty that you will find yourself re-reading certain lines for no reason other than to enjoy them once again. Chapter 23 of the text (perhaps the book’s most famous) is brilliant and to the point. It is very short, funny, and kind of wise. Its opening line, “It is an important and popular fact that things are not often what they seem” could be a thematic statement for the book. One of the novel’s key devices is the idea that Earth is an experiment, and without revealing too much, I will say that it gives the novel its focus. Also enjoyable are the characters of Marvin the paranoid android and Eddie, the shipboard computer on “The Heart of Gold” (a spaceship that serves as the novel’s main setting). Some of the text’s best moments and lines belong to them, and I was more endeared to them than I was to the novel’s two human characters.“The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” is a delightful and quick read and I will be continuing my trip through the galaxy with its sequel, “The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.”2. “The Restaurant at the End of the Universe” reads like a typical adventure tale, and it is more in this genre than its predecessor “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”. The restaurant of the title is a place where the characters go and can literally watch the end of the Universe during dinner. Trust me, the way Mr. Adams explains it, it makes sense! The plot of the novel begins right where its predecessor left off, and the set up is that space psychiatrists plot to kill Arthur Dent and Trillian because they are the last survivors from Earth, which we found out in “Hitchhiker” was an experiment designed to answer the purpose of “Life, the universe, and everything.” The psychiatrists do not want that question answered because they would be out of business. And with this clever premise it is off to the races. In this delightful and quick romp of a novel we get to meet space psychiatrists, rock stars, and the ruler of the universe. And it goes without saying that none of it is as expected. The satire of the rock stars and bands is wonderful, as is the clever jab at rock stars that use to flee tax jurisdictions to record albums. In the book one mega space rock star even goes into “suspended death” for two years for the tax deductions. The last 20 pages of the book contain some pretty rough satire of modern professions and social dynamics. And then the text ends abruptly, like Mr. Adams was leading you into the next novel. It worked, because I will be continuing my journey with these hitchhikers. You should too!3. Of the three novels that I have read so far out of the five that compose the “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” series, “Life, the Universe and Everything” is the weakest, but it is still incredibly good. The whole book feels like a Monty Python sketch, but the first few chapters especially feel that way. It works, but it does get a little tiresome after a while. The humor in this text is mostly through wordplay. It serves the book well and is a strength of this novel because in terms of plot “Life, the Universe and Everything” is all over the place. The unity of the wordplay and humor serves to coalesce (as much as it can) a very scattered text. Especially enjoyable is a clever discourse on swear words, their usage and how they evolve and change. In the world of this novel the word “Belgium” is their equivalent of the F-word. This part of the novel is a witty piece of satirical writing, and is very enjoyable. There are two interesting bits in this novel I would like to share in this review. The first is one of my favorite cameo appearances in this entire series thus far, the character of Wowbagger, the Infinitely Prolonged. He is an alien who through an accident has immortality and is bored to tears. So he makes it a mission to insult everyone in the Universe. His occasional appearances in this story are a joy. Another aspect of the text that I enjoyed is that the ultimate question and answer to everything remains unexplained. There is also a thinly veiled satire aimed at religious symbols where it seems Adams is mocking finding value in such things. It is an engaging section of the text.I will be moving on to the fourth book in this series soon. I have enjoyed this ride so far!4. This fourth novel in the series begins exactly as the first one, word for word, with one small twist. You can decide for yourself what you think of that twist. I did not care for it, as it shifts the focus in this text from the ones that preceded it. “So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish” begins with Arthur Dent back on earth, which is no longer destroyed (it was blown up in the first book of the series) but the explanation for how this is so is best glossed over if one wants to fully enter the world of the text. This novel does not feature the other characters from the previous three, so fans of Zaphod Beeblebrox and Trillian will be disappointed. Other series staples such as Ford Prefect and Marvin the Android make cameos in the novel’s final pages, but they seemed forced and not all that interesting in the context Mr. Adams uses here. This are some shining moments in this book, among them chapter 25 in which the author’s persona intrudes into the text to answer the question “Does Arthur Dent f-word?” We also get to see “God’s final message to His creation”, and it is actually not a letdown. At one point in the novel Arthur tells someone “See first, think later, then test” as the best way to approach something one does not fully comprehend. If you don’t take the last two parts of his advice while you are reading “So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish” you can enjoy the text.I am anxious to see how the series concludes in installment 5, and I will be traveling that way soon.5. "Mostly Harmless" is a great example of a writer extending a series by one book too many. Of the five books in the "Hitchhiker" series numbers four and five don't add much to it, and take a lot from it. "Mostly Harmless" just feels out of sync with the books that preceded it. Stylistically it is also very different, the chapters are much longer, the humor is much rarer, etc. It is not a good change.A big flaw of the text is that our hero Arthur Dent does not even show up until chapter seven, and even when he does there is no transition from how we left him in book four, "So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish." From chapter seven to almost the final 40 pages the chapters alternate point of view between Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect. I found Prefect's story boring until his storyline merges with Dent's about 3/4s of the way through the novel. The book does have some good moments, particularly chapter nine in which it finally feels like the other novels in the series. Arthur Dent goes to the planet Hawalius to seek the advice of the oracles that inhabit it. In this chapter we see sparks of the Douglas Adams from the previous texts and it is a joy to read. There is also a witty cameo appearance by Elvis, which is cleverly woven into the plotline. As has been stated in previous reviews "Mostly Harmless" is a dark text, almost nihilistic in its themes. The series ends in a uncharacteristic manner. Although as a reader I did not like the ending per se, I do feel it was kind of appropriate. It feels jarring and out of place at the same time. I can't say much more without spoiling it. Regardless it does give the series a sense of definite completion, and I think that is a good thing.

This was one of those books that I find a lot of people have heard of but not a lot of people have read - if you're one of those people and you like dry, satire-style humor and imaginative science fiction, certainly give this book a try. This book is super easy to read and is a humorous take on space and time travel. It follows a 'normal' man who unknowingly befriends an alien hitchhiker and is taken along on some entertaining journeys through space. They go to other universes, meet interesting characters, discover futuristic technology (including a melodramatic, depressed robot), and discover the ACTUAL answer to the universe! The only question left now is... what exactly was the question? Sounds ridiculous, I know, but you really get sucked in!

Beautiful book and a great story. I recommend this to anyone. I originally read these books on my Kindle and enjoyed them so much I had to look for something worth displaying on my bookshelf. This is perfect. The design is great, it is sturdy, and the print is a nice size.

My English teacher wasn't amused 35 years ago when I said this was my favorite line in literature. (It wasn't, but I do love it.) Douglas Adams was everything an sf writer should be: witty, humane and imaginative, and this work illustrates it all.A better quote is, “And then, one Thursday, nearly two thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change, a girl sitting on her own in a small café in Rickmansworth suddenly realized what it was that had been going wrong all this time, and she finally knew how the world could be made a good and happy place. This time it was right, it would work, and no one would have to get nailed to anything,” but that's too long for a classroom discussion in freshman English

Strangely entertaining throughout, but it does get a bit tedious and "off the wall" at times (typical of Adams style, I suppose). "Marvin" the robot was my favorite character, fondly remembering Alan Rickman as I read the book. Recommended for those who are willing to take a flight of fancy on a cold winter's day----or more. The film of the same name is equally odd and worth watching. Now, I'm reading the Dirk Gently "Holistic Detective Agency" book and find them equally strange and sometimes difficult to follow.

Review

"Pachirat's extraordinary narrative tells us about much more than abused animals and degraded workers. It opens our eyes to the kind of society in which we live."--Peter Singer, author of Animal Liberation"A lucid writer, Pachirat excels in explaining how a slaughterhouse works."--Ted Conover, The Nation"The book is superbly written, especially given the grimness of the subject."--Mark Bittman, The New York Times, Opinionator column"A fascinating, gut-wrenching study--but absolutely not for the weak of stomach."--Kirkus Reviews"A truly stunning achievement. Every Twelve Seconds takes us into the slaughterhouse and asks: Why do we work so hard to conceal the daily routine of industrialized killing? The result is a masterpiece that is as sophisticated as it is hard to put down."--Steve Striffler, author of Chicken: The Dangerous Transformation of America's Favorite Food"By far the most thorough and immersive accounting of slaughterhouse operations in contemporary agribusiness."--Erik Marcus, author of Meat Market: Animals, Ethics, & Money"Pachirat's prose and tone are readable, horrific, and compelling. The documentary spell it casts recalls the steady, unflinching eye of Orwell's Road to Wigan Pier. Astonishing."--John Bowe, author of Nobodies: Slave Labor in Modern America and the Dark Side of the New Global Economy"Timothy Pachirat's courageous study of kill floor work exposes the fiction of 'humane' slaughter. This book is required reading for people who care about animals and for those interested in how distance and concealment operate in our society."--Gene Baur, President of Farm Sanctuary and author of Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food". . . a detailed and brilliantly executed ethnography of an industrialized slaughterhouse in Omaha . . . its clear, jargon-free prose will make it accessible to both graduate and undergraduate students across disciplines."--Clarissa Rile Hayward, author of De-facing Power"A profoundly sobering exploration of the interplay between the imperatives of the modern meatpacking industry and the dehumanizing slaughter of cattle."--Ian Shapiro, author of The Real World of Democratic Theory"As a lawyer who has learned the food industry's hidden truths from whistleblowers and insiders, I commend Pachirat for sharing his philosophical and physical exploration of the obscured world of animal agriculture."--Amanda L. Hitt, Director, Food Integrity Campaign Government Accountability Project"[I]t would take an exceptionally visceral, in-depth account to make a meaningful contribution to the literature of animals suffering for our nourishment. That's exactly what Timothy Pachirat provides in Every Twelve Seconds."--Tom Bartlett, Chronicle of Higher Education"From June to December 2004, Pachirat (politics, New Sch.) worked at a cattle slaughterhouse in Nebraska. During his tenure, he worked in three distinct areas: in the cooler as a liver hanger, on the killing floor herding cattle to the knocking box, and in quality control. Through these disparate positions, he gained a thorough understanding of the formal and informal rules that govern American slaughterhouses. His conclusions are grim--bureaucracy and ineptitude combine in a way that does not bode favorably for food safety. He argues that industrialized slaughter is a hidden world tolerable only because it is invisible to most. Repugnant tasks like the ones associated with processing cattle should be more transparent and would perhaps be duly transformed as a result. Complete with meticulous diagrams showing each worker's position in the slaughterhouse, descriptions of each worker's job duties, and an appendix detailing cattle body parts and their uses, this compelling documentary work illuminates in great detail the workings of an industrial slaughterhouse. VERDICT For anyone curious about the origin of beef in America or those interested in the politics of concealment."--Diana Hartle, Univ. of Georgia Lib., Athens, Library Journal"The fascination of Every Twelve Seconds lies in the meaty main chapters, which recount Pachirat's passage through the hiring process and then into the factory and abruptly out of it, five months later."--Ted Conover, The Nation"Pachirat thinks about the larger issues of killing in a satisfying, comprehensive way: how people in the plant handle it, and how he did."--Ted Conover, The Nation"This is a masterful expose, written in crystalline prose. In tying the cruelty and dehumanization of industrialized slaughter to the politics of sight, the book adds to a growing canon of recent work . . . by extending people's understanding of and exacerbating human repugnance to one of the great moral failings of current times. Summing Up: Highly recommended."--Choice"This book is important. Very important. [. . .] buy it, read it, and share it with anyone who thinks they're at peace with eating animals. After all, what Pachirat shows without telling, is that every time we eat animals we promote suffering that, should we confront it directly, we'd deem entirely unacceptable."--James McWilliams, Eating Plants blog"A firsthand account of various kinds of slaughterhouse work [in which] Timothy Pachirat did it all. . . . We can count ourselves lucky that Every Twelve Seconds is a very good book if not a flawless one. . . . It forces upon us an unacademic yet profound question: How can something be right, if it feels so horribly wrong?"--B. R. Myers, The Atlantic"The Jungle for the 21st century."--Portland Press Herald"Every Twelve Seconds is a bold, gut-wrenching, beautifully written book. I suspect it has already found its way onto a number of syllabi for courses in animal and food studies. Yet its appeal is broader... its substantive and theoretical focus on violence, power, and "dirty work" should make the book a welcome addition to a myriad of "mainstream" sociology and political science courses as well. Finally, by complementing the vivid ethnographic narrative with penetrating yet accessible critical theory, Every Twelve Seconds also holds out the promise of contributing to the public discussion about the morality of organised slaughter."--Colin Jerolmack, Society & Animals

It starts out a bit dry and technical, but stay with it-- this true account of one man's experience in a typical large-scale (~2500 per day) cattle slaughterhouse and "processing" facility is insightful on many levels. It gives a very detailed account of exactly how these operations work, but for me what was the most eye-opening insights were those related to how complex the conflicts of interest are, and how they in turn make it impossible for either the USDA or the slaughterhouse workers to adequately monitor the quality of the "product" and the way the animals are treated. In addition, he infused his perspective with compassion for the people who work there, in addition to compassion for the animals. The way the reality of what is happening there has to be concealed even from the people who work there (by designing the building with lots of concealing walls, turns, etc) underscores how much that ignorance is required in order for people to do their jobs. The mental "compartmentalizing" of what they are doing reminds me of the same coping technique used by people working in the Nazi concentration camps. People do things they would never normally do when they mentally compartmentalize it and remove their focus from the suffering of the person or animal in front of them. It made it even more clear to me that the market for animal products must vanish in order for this insidious factory farming machine to come to a stop. And this books helps the reader take the step of SEEING and KNOWING that is essential in order for pity, mercy and compassion to follow. May pity, mercy, and compassion truly follow for everyone who reads this book.

There are a few thoughts that I have that should cause all business leaders, consumers and workers to reflect.First, what have we created in a culture that puts the most value on the lowest price? $8 per hour employees work in difficult conditions doing work, slaughtering a cow every 12 seconds, that most of us would not consider.Second, how far do we allow special interests to control legislative initiatives specifically and the government in general? Reading about the USDA's role and the perpetual chess game between the slaughterhouse managers and federal inspectors, it seems to me that investigative work like this book is one of the few tools that we have to shine a light on the things that happen on the kill floor. Iowa's and Florida's legislative proposals that would make this book and other communication (e.g., video, pictures) describing ag practices criminal acts are disturbing.I didn't enjoy the book. How can anyone enjoy graphic descriptions of the knocking box process and cutters? I learned a lot, though, and so will you. Use this book as a way to see through the cement walls of the industrialized killing machine and understand how your consumer behavior fuels it.

A fresh look at a rotten industry. Lacks the vegan bias often found in such works, refreshingly so, allowing for different flavors of insight.I once did quick a contract job in the admin offices of a huge slaughterhouse in Colorado, and begged the opportunity to look around - I needed to see where the food I ate came from, whether or not I liked what I saw. How many people have such an opportunity before them? After many days, and deliberation amongst various managers, a maintenance worker gave me the full informal "tour" - from feed lot to shipping room. This book was a helpful reminder of detailing that quick hour long tour which was too overwhelming and surreal to change have much effect on my dietary ways at the time. Oddly enough, my carnism was only reinforced! I was expecting much worse conditions frankly, much more overt suffering.Timothy Pachirat's book does a fine job documenting the more covert (as well as overt) forms of suffering that take place in the disassembly line, with an emphasis on the humans involved. The human element is essential. So much focus is placed on animal suffering (and rightly so), we often forget about the element of human suffering in the production process.Much like the clothing we all wear, very few people are directly involved in the production of the food they eat. There was much talk of Nike's labor practices overseas years ago, meanwhile most people haven't a clue of the company or location where their "foods" come from - a different kind of sweatshop hidden right in our own backyard.

The first part of the book is a little dry, when he is describing what every in of the factory looks like, but for the most part it's a story with some interesting characters. Great for a movie. Great writing! I'd like to know more about what the author does to stop this horrible industry. Is he vegan?

Pachirat is a scholar, but the book reads like it was written by a staff writer for The New Yorker. This is a great expose of the meat-industry, something that anyone who cares about workers or animals should read.

The book takes on a completely different perspective from many other documentaries on the same type of subject. Well written, objective and brings the voices and experiences of real people working in slaughterhouses to life.

To anyone who wants to know the truth, I recommend you read this book. It is truly an eye-opening account of something that takes place by the thousands on a daily basis.

Great read for all meat eaters

This purchase was just okay for me. Basically, the product delivers what was promised, so it's possible I set my expectations too high. That is why I gave it 3 stars instead of 2. But I was (and still am) very much on the verge of giving it 2 stars instead. You get the following:1. A folder that isn't of particularly thick stock. I doubt it will stand up to much gaming table abuse. It has some basic information along the inside bottom flaps that is more geared to newer players, listing the various things your character can do on its turn. For newcomers to the game, this seems like an excellent resource. For veterans, it would never get used. I would have liked the see the folder built tougher. The cover art on the folder, however, is really attractive, particularly the skulls and roses motif along the bottom.2. Four copies of the default 5e character sheet, double sided. The paper stock feels maybe just a tiny bit heavier than standard copy paper (all of the character sheets are on this same bond, so I won't repeat the description below). You can download this exact character sheet for free from the Wizards of the Coast website.3. Four double-sided copies of a slightly modified 5e character sheet that gets rid of the Personality Traits, Ideals, Bonds, and Flaws, and uses that real estate to expand the box for Features & Traits. If you play in a game where those background traits are not used, then this is actually a pretty decent version of the character sheet. Personally, I love the background traits, so I won't be making use of this sheet.4. Four double-sided copies of yet another slightly modified 5e character sheet. This iteration keeps the background traits. It groups all of the skills together in subsections next to their associated ability score. The sheet also trims away some space from Features & Traits to expand the equipment section. I think Features & Traits is an important enough section that losing some of its valuable real estate for equipment is not an ideal move. This character sheet can be downloaded for free from the Wizards of the Coast website. It is called "Character Sheet - Alternative."5. Four single-sided copies of the spell page of the standard 5e character sheet. This can be downloaded for free from the Wizards of the Coast website.6. Eight single-sided copies of a simplified 5e character sheet intended for use with brand-new players. I do not like this character sheet at all. It uses two very huge pieces of real estate for "Things You Should Do" and "Thinks You Shouldn't Do." But, I will admit that this might be a solid sheet for someone brand new to roleplaying games. So I grudgingly give this sheet about a C+ grade. All in all, I'm a bit disappointed, especially for a $9.95 product. It's basically a cheap (but attractive) folder and a bunch of character sheets, most of which you can download for free from Wizards of the Coast themselves. I would have liked to see something more akin to the old school AD&D character portfolios, in which you could write huge amounts of information on your character's backgrounds, deeds, last will & testament, companions, enemies, etc. With the Amazon pre-order price guarantee, I got this product for $6.01. I think I paid about the maximum I think this product is worth.

Comes in a sturdy, beautiful folder. The inside of the folder has information on what a player can do on their turn, along with a space to write your name. Contains several copies of multiple versions of D&D character sheets. There are about 20 total character sheets, along with several spell sheets. Two of the variants of character sheets are what you can find online for free on the Wizards of the Coast website, but the third variant isn't available online as far as I can tell. This new version is a much more bare-bones character sheet, which is much less intimidating to new players, while it is helpful to experienced players who want to fill out a character sheet in record time. This item is exactly what it claims to be, and if you want a really nice folder for D&D, along with a new style of character sheets, it might be worth checking out. I think this serves as a nice product for people who don't have access to a printer. That being said, I think the price of $10 is too high for this product. Ultimately, it's about 24 sheets of paper with a fairly nice folder. The folder's quality by itself isn't nice enough to merit the cost in my opinion, and I think a better price point would be in the neighborhood of $5 to $7. That's why I'm giving it 4 stars rather than 5.

All I have to say is "I can't believe I paid $10 for this". Literally if you have access to a printer, don't buy this. It is just the D&D character sheets printed out on normal printer paper, stuck in a flimsy folder. I didn't know what I was expecting with this product, but for $10 I was expecting something more than something I could produce for less than 10 cents with a normal printer.

I really liked this product. I've tried printing character sheets and spell lists before but couldn't figure out the formatting. I really like the fact that you get different styles of character sheets. Once you get this, you can always make copies. When people complain about the quality of the folder and sheets themselves, I don't get it. The folder is standard quality and the sheets are slightly thicker than average paper. There is a lot you get for ten dollars, so I think it's worth it!

These devotionals were very helpful as I traveled a very dark road. Several times each week the devotional seemed like it had been written just for me just for that day.

If you want a daily does of the Word, this is the devotional for you! Learning to pray God's Word is the basis of effective and answered prayer. Jeremiah 1:12 tells us that God watches over His Word to perform it and Isaiah 55:11 says His Word will not return to Him void. Since God puts emphasis on His Word so should we. Beth breaks His Word down in bite sized pieces that we can meditate on and apply to our life circumstances.

This little book is help me stay on track the last 4 years I love it its simple and its pure and it short and refocuses you on what's important in your day every morning?

This is only so so to me. I keep it in my daily devotional line-up because it takes only about a minute to read each entry, but I rarely feel moved or inspired by it. I don't pick up on a huge progression day to day either. This is not the devotional that sticks with me or gives me the word I need for the day. It is a small dose of the Word, though and certainly an easy way to touch in on study.

Until this book, I didn't know how to "pray through God's word." Now I understand. This book is especially important to me on days when I don't have a chunk of time for bible study. I read the day's thought, then use the verses & thoughts to shape my prayer focus through the day. I've discovered many new "favorite" bible verses & the day's reading is normally exactly what I need for that day.

I enjoyed this devotional. The devotions are very short but make good points to dwell on before starting the day.

By far my favorite book from Beth Moore. I have found that practicing these prayers have brought peace and joy to my heart and soul. I have kept this book close by to grab when I'm feeling overwhelmed and need to clear off the lens of my perspective.

A great companion resource for Beth Moore's "Breaking Free" Bible study, or to use on it's on. The author gives Biblical resources for praying for various topics. Indispensable for the Christian who wants to grow.
