I have wanted to do mosaics all my life and never have... BUT! This book is so amazing that I am on-fire to get started asap! This book is fabulous for its designs alone! I ooh-ed and ahhh-ed every time I flipped to the next page of patterns and colors! I can't tell you if the directions are good or not yet because I have zero experience. I just received the book in today's mail and can't put it down... I don't even have any tools or supplies yet. What I can say is that this book has inspired me to finally get started! I also love that it's spiral bound, "terrific idea", the book stays open with no effort, and is nice and flat and easy to read while you're working. It's also such a great size! Hardcover part is 8 inches tall and 6.5 inches wide when closed and just shy of 13 inches wide when open. I'm looking at it so easily as I type this and glance over to look at it. Oh, I can go and on, but instead I'm going outside to drain and clean my leaky concrete birdbath and get it prepped for a mosaic lining and transform it into a thing of beauty. I gotta get going! I would think that there must be a design in this book to suit almost anyone's fancy... especially beginners like me. In fact, I think it would be a great book to start a little mosaic workshop group with! Share the experience and ideas with friends! There are plenty of books that can show techniques if this one doesn't go into details enough, and don't forget YouTube for tutorials, but the wealth and variety of designs and color schemes in this book are lovely and easily accessed. It's eye candy! Wonderful layout! The book starts out with a brief introduction by the author and an explanation of how to use this terrific little book, (6.75" X 8") though 249 pages of cover-to-cover inspiration is no little thing. The next section entitled "Inspirations" is a gallery of original works by various mosaic artists, followed by Materials and Tools, then techniques (which covers color selection, design and application.) Finally, 190 pages of patterns! What I like best about the page layout in the pattern section is that each pattern (shown as a scale drawing) includes a PHOTOGRAPH of an actual mosaic, rather than just a colored line drawing. In addition, along with the scale drawing and photo are a suggested color palette, a key indicating level of difficulty, plus lots of notes offering ideas for combinations and directions for working the design (such as starting points and direction.) The patterns range from very simple to involved. There's a section dealing with the alphabet and numbers that shows one style letter, upper and lower case, but each letter is done in a different tiled design. This book is worth every penny. If I had to offer a negative, I would say that it, like too many of the mosaic books, doesn't go into outdoor application deep enough. I would really like to find a book that addresses that issue thoroughly. But then, this is primarily a pattern book.

This book is not new, but is highly recommended by mosaic artists as a great beginner book. There are a lot of photo instructions, and color-codes for tiles and grout combinations. I found the actual art pieces rather dated, and not my style, but I would recommend this book for beginners as it is packed with a lot of great tips.

As a mosaic artist, there are times my creative side needs a boost. This book has some excellent ideas and is a good resource for technical help.

Please don't buy this book. It is just a waste of money. The information is very superficial and will be of no use. Buy "Mosaic: Techniques and Traditions" and "The encyclopedia of mosaic techniques" to start working with mosaics.This is not at all a mosaic bible.

This book is very good for someone new to mosaic as I am. It has very simple designs and explains the color choices very simply. I will be using this book frequently.

I had borrowed the book from a friend and as I'm just starting mosaics I found it very informative, with loads of ideas and hints to able the beginner to manage the mosaics, I Love it, so decided I couldn't do without one of these books of my very own.If anyone is looking for a very good book to begin mosaics, this is the one to purchase.

It is the best book available. I looked for other books but this was by far the most authoritative and helpful.

This book is a collection of essays, all of them based around Robert Greenleaf's groundbreaking essay "The Servant as Leader" and book "Servant Leadership" from the 1970's. Greenleaf introduced a new way to look at leadership, with a focus first on serving, and the ripples of his revolutionary vision for leadership are still resonating with us today. Spears and Lawrence have collected an eclectic assortment of reflections on Greenleaf's work. Some of them are simple essays describing the various behavioral components of Greenleaf's servant leadership. Some of them are interviews with well-known advocates of servant leadership. Some of them are stories of a particular company that has been run under the framework of servant leadership or a unique partnership between two organizations which were collaboratively joined together under servant leadership. This great variation in both style and substance of the various essays kept the book fresh and readable.However, the almost spastic nature of the disparate essays also kept the book from feeling like a cohesive unit with any sort of specific direction. As much as the variation kept the reading experience lively, it almost felt jarring at times to bounce around from essay to essay, without any sense of connection from one to the next (beyond an obvious adoration for Robert Greenleaf and his work that was consistent from beginning to end). I realize that a book of this nature simply cannot flow together as if written by one author, but I feel like some sense of continuity would have been helpful.In any case, I'm glad to have read this book, if for no other reason than to have encountered some specific examples of servant leadership in real-life institutions. Greenleaf's book presents a compelling vision for his idea of servant leadership, but it remains largely theoretical and rather abstract. The stories in this book help to fill out the picture that Greenleaf was painting. Some of the essays were rather forgettable, and the lack of continuity prevented this book from being one of my favorite leadership books, but I'm happy to recommend it to those who would like some helpful follow-up to Greenleaf's work, including specific cases of servant leadership in action.

A must read for anyone in management or wanting to enter into management. Had to read for class and now it is part of my favorite books.

I enjoy reading anything that Larry Spears writes with regard to Servant Leadership!

Al Featherston has covered Duke and ACC sports since 1970. He joined the sports staff of the Durham Sun in 1974 and served as the assistant sports editor of that paper from 1975-91. He then worked for the new Durham Herald-Sun from 1991- 2005. There are multitudes of Duke basketball fans and Featherston is considered by many one of the classic sportswriters, especially when it comes to Duke. The book is well-designed with intros to some of the best Duke players ever, then first person accounts are presented of the most memorable game by the particular player. I recall many of these as some of the greatest games in Duke basketball history. I can't believe this book received no marketing. Surely if some current Blue Devil fans are not super-interested in past Duke stars, there are thousands of long-time fans who would love a book like this.

Good book by Al Featherston, but I doubt other fans will appreciate it. Of course being a Duke alum, I don't care. For Duke fans that have a sense of the long history of Duke basketball, it is an interesting read.Featherston has one of the better writing styles of the writers that follow the Devils. With many other books, I often feel like I am reading a sports page column. Featherston usually puts more into his writing, and it shows again here.The book is made up of chapters, each one done by a former Duke player. There is no linking between chapters, each one is about 10 pages and is inclusive within itself. There is a Featherston summary of the player, then a lead up to the game of their lives. There is a first person section about the game, then it goes back to Featherston with an aftermath and small write up of where the player is now. The first person accounts are fairly short, never more than a couple of pages, and some just a few paragraphs.Most of the major Duke stars over the past ~50 years are here. Some notable exceptions are Tate Armstrong, Steve Vacendak, Vince Taylor, JJ Redick, Tommy Amaker, Grant Hill and Elton Brand. Being an '85 grad, I would have loved to have read the account by Taylor of the '82 game vs. Clemson (Duke won in 3 OTs, led by Taylor). But then again, it's not like anyone in the book isn't worthy of inclusion.In any case, here is a list of the players and their games:Wojo - vs. UNC, 28 Feb 98Marin - vs. Kentucky, 18 Mar 66 (the only loss in the book, I believe)Heyman, vs. UNC, 4 Feb 61 (the fight game)Mullins, vs. 'Nova, 13 Mar 64Melchionni, vs. Maryland, 3 Feb 73Banks. I would recommend this volume for the two essays that preface Robert Williams’s story, even if his forthright and compelling account were not so searingly spot on.“The first witness to speak always seems correct, until another shall question him,” says Proverbs, and the old book was never more right.Sensible whites will find this account difficult to read, but the sources of our discomfort we should not fear to illuminate, on race most especially, of all issues.The African Diaspora in these United States will (again, today) be appalled and saddened at how very far they have not come; Williams is worth their discomfort, too.

This in depth rendition of the Robert F. Williams saga supplemented the little "Radio Free Dixie" book that was written in the 1960s by Williams. Negroes With Guns is a much more complete story, which covers the broader context and finishes Williams' story through his exile to Mao's China, his return to the US and his ultimate death.I have been involved in most progressive movements since the Vietnam War, and had mentors from the early non-violent Civil Rights movement, but I was unaware of both the extent and the success of the armed black resistance movement that was contemporary with the better publicized SCLC/SNCC movement of MLK et al.Highly recommended.

The author, Robert F. Williams, was like any other African American man of his generation and time period. He had just returned home to Monroe, North Carolina from serving in the United States Military only to fight a war on the homefront.I was assigned to read this book for my 20th Century American History class in college and it's a crucial part of a non-fiction account in explaining how life was in the South during the Jim Crow laws and segregration in the 1950s until the Civil Rights movement was in full force.The author writes from his point of view in a convincing and persuasive style in order to help defend his right and others to bear arms in the South and the NRA did support his right. In his home town of Monroe, North Carolina, African Americans were subjected to horrors of abuse and their perpetrators (almost always Caucasian) would get away from law enforcement.Williams writes that he doesn't support violence with violence. No, he argues that for African Americans in his community, the right to bear arms and defend themselves is necessary since law enforcement, government agencies, and even the Monroe Police Department failed to defend their citizens based on race.The stories here are true and horrifying about injustice to African Americans during this period. This book should be mandatory reading for everybody in the United States with regards to studying civil rights.

This book is one of several that refute the notion that our nation's tradition of firearms is solely the province of the white man. Black people in this country used guns, enjoyed guns, and all too often needed guns for self-defense, especially in situations where law enforcement was in cahoots with local racist elements. I recommend it to one and all.

I am a fan of 2A history. This book tells a story that is seldom told. Firearms are portrayed as tools of oppression and violence. There is a very strong tradition of Blacks owning and using firearms for sport and self defense. Think of the iconic photo of Malcolm X sitting by the window with an M1 Carbine to repel a possible threat to himself and/or his family.I wish politicians and self appointed 'community leaders' that use firearms as a scapegoat for other problems in the Black community would read this book. I wish people that use terms like 'Saturday Night Specia;' knew the true meaning of these terms and the racist intent. I wish they knew the real origins and purposes of gun control. These people should then understand that firearms ownership is not just a 'white thing' it is an AMERICAN thing and a basic civil right of ALL CITIZENS no matter what race.Irony-- those people living in high crime areas who don't understand 'stand your ground' laws and the 'castle doctrine'and want to repeal these protections are the very people who would most benefit from them.Know your history so that you will remain a free citizen, not a slave or a subject.
