 This is a really wonderful book for toddlers! My son absolutely loves the interactive pages that each have a lift-up flap revealing different animals and landscapes. I love this type of book for my son. Not only can I read the story to him, but the pictures are engaging and he can learn lots of new vocabulary words by pointing to all of the illustrations, page by page. The pictures are simple and we'll done in a collage-like-style. Very cute. Even though they aren't overly detailed, they are easily recognizable to a young child starting to learn animal names. The story itself is really quite sweet and my son followed along as I read and pointed to the words. When we finish this story, he turns the book over and wants to read it again and again. We take turns pointing to each little picture and practice saying what they are together. Really great find!

Little owl journies far and wide but ends up at home where she’s happiest. The animals are cute and there are four different landscapes with different animals to look at and each landscape has one big fold-out page to look at. The rhymes aren’t stellar but we talk about the animals more anyway.

Phrases to describe Little Friends: Home Sweet Home: easy, gentle, cute illustrations. I really wanted to like this book, especially since my 1 year-old really seemed to like the artwork and the lift-the-flap action. Each spread is dedicated to a different biome and the animals that live there, and therein lies the problem: in the Arctic environment, there were polar bears AND penguins shown together, which irked me to no end. I will still let my baby play with the book (if I don't donate it to the library first) but I probably will not read it to him again.

Sturdy cardboard book with well constructed flip out flaps that add to the story. My son absolutely loves picking up the flaps and pointing out all the things under them. After a few months it is still one of his favorite books. Very light, vibrant colors and a very brief, easy to read story.

I (and my children) prefer a bit more excitement behind the “lift and flaps”. Under the flaps simply expose a continuance of the same picture. Boring, but cute pictures

This is my baby girl's favorite book. She laughs hysterically whenever I pull it out which is the cutest thing ever. We actually had to buy it twice because the first book got a little too much love. The only thing we didn't like about the second book was that the text wasn't in the cute colorful writing.

Beautiful artwork and lovely story for little ones. I bought two, one each for my little one year old grandsons. It's become one of their favorite books!

About the Author

Schuyler W. Huck was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1943. He attended school in two Chicago suburbs (Riverside and Glenview), receiving a high school diploma in 1961 from Glenbrook North H.S. His undergraduate work was taken at DePauw University (Greencastle, Indiana) where he graduated in 1965 with a major in psychology and a minor in sociology. He pursued a doctorate in Educational Psychology at Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois), receiving the Ph.D. in 1970. His doctoral specialization was applied statistics, testing, and research design. In 1970, Dr. Huck joined the faculty at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville as an Assistant Professor. Affiliated with the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology, he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1974 and to Professor in 1977. Since receiving his doctorate, Dr. Huck has taught at two other educational institutions while on leave from UT. For 10 summers between 1977 and 1986, he was employed as a Visiting Professor in the Psychology and Education Departments at the University of Nevada (Reno). From July, 1988 until July, 1989, he served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado. Over the past three decades, Professor Huck has been involved in an ongoing program of research and scholarly activity. He is the senior author of three books: (1) Reading Statistics and Research (with the 3rd edition published in 2000 by Allyn & Bacon/Longman), (2) Rival Hypotheses: Alternative Explanations for Data-Based Conclusions (published in 1979 by Harper & Row), and (3) Statistical Illusions (published in 1984 by Harper & Row); he has had 34 technical papers published in a variety of refereed journals (Teaching Statistics, Educational and Psychological Measurement, Journal of Educational Statistics, American Educational Research Journal, Journal of Educational Measurement, Psychological Bulletin, Journal of Experimental Education, Journal of Applied Psychology, Science Education, Teaching of Psychology, Mathematics Teacher, Journal of Counseling Psychology, Research Quarterly, Physiology & Behavior); and he has made over 60 oral presentations of his work at professional meetings (International Conference on Teaching Statistics, American Educational Research Association, American Psychological Association, and regional meetings affiliated with these two national organizations). In addition to making his own contributions to the professional literature, Professor Huck has been heavily involved in screening the work of others and in serving as a consultant on others' projects. He has reviewed book prospecti/full manuscripts sent to publishing companies, papers considered for possible publication in professional journals, and abstracts submitted for possible presentation at conventions. In his role as a consultant, Professor Huck has worked on several projects, including (1) test-development efforts conducted by: the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, the American Association of State Psychology Boards, Tennessee's State Departments of Education and Human Services, the Child Welfare Institute (Atlanta), and UT's Center for Government Training, (2) a three-year NSF research project designed to assess new procedures for helping math teachers assist students improve their creativity and problem-solving skills, and (3) a trial in which the State of Tennessee was being sued and for which Tennessee's Office of the Attorney General asked Dr. Huck to testify as an Expert Witness in the areas of testing, research design, and applied statistics. At various points in his career, Dr. Huck has received awards/recognition from students, colleagues, and administrators. While at DePauw, he received the Frank C. Tucker Award for Leadership. Early in his stay at Tennessee, the Student Government Association tapped him as one of the University's Outstanding Teachers. Soon thereafter, colleagues at UT gave him the first Annual Award for Outstanding Faculty Research in the College of Education. The major honors bestowed upon Professor Huck, however, came (1) in 1983 when he was selected to be a UT Distinguished Service Professor, a prestigious title that he holds for the duration of his stay at the University, (2) in 1988 when he was asked to serve, for a year, on the faculty at the Air Force Academy as a Distinguished Visiting Professor, (3) in 1984 and 1990 when the scholarly work of two doctoral advisees received Outstanding Dissertation Awards in national competitions conducted by AERA, (4) in 1991 when he was elected by his colleagues at other universities as President of AERA's Educational Statisticians SIG, (5) in 1993 when he was one of the first two faculty members given the title of Chancellor's Teaching Scholar, a post involving work with UT's Chancellor and other top administrators, and (6) in 1995 when the GTA Mentoring Program (a project that grew out of his idea on how to improve undergraduate education at research universities) was deemed worthy of support by UT and the Alcoa Foundation.

I am an academic physician who does clinical research. I am not a statistician and for the most part statistical analysis for my research projects are conducted by professionals in this area. However, I needed to get a better understanding of what my statisticians do so that I can communicate better with them and interpret the clinical research I read. This text was the course textbook in a statistics class I took while getting a master's degree in academic medicine at USC. It is by far the very best text I've ever read from the standpoint of helping a non-statistician's interpret statistical works. It is not meant to teach its' reader how to do statistics but rather how to interpret them so the low score reviews on Amazon that were looking for mathematics and work through problems in the text are looking at the wrong book. That was never the author's stated claim for the text. If you want to do statistics look elsewhere. If you want the very best book for learning how to interpret them then this is the text to get.

Reading Statistics and Research by Schuyler W. Huck should be part of every education student's reference library because heis a great explainer of all the different elements that are involved in statistics and educational research. Huck's book provides the studentof education with the necessary background information to critically examine a journal article, to examine the design and results of a statistical study, and to avoid certain common errors that educational researchers sometimes make. Reading Statistics and Research is not a primer or 'how-to-do' statistics book for the novice. Ignore critical reviews that fault his book for this aspect as this was not his stated purpose for writing the book as mentioned in the preface of the book. A+++++ book and fun and informative to read.

This book is great for learning how to analyze statistical arguments, but it does not teach you how to compute the different statistical tests/quantities. I do not recommend this book for a beginner statistician until you have learned how to compute the statistics.

As a doctoral student who is trying to get a handle on statistics, I found this book very helpful. Huck does a nice job of supporting what you learn in statistic classes (all the formula and theory `stuff') with real world interpretations and examples. I find his book to be a good resource when I am reading and critiquing journal articles, and when I am trying to word my statistical results in appropriate research vernacular.Please note - this book is not a stats how to book and as such contains no formulas.

Clarity for tough topics. One of the best textbooks I've ever used. I've gone back to it several times, trying to clarify poorly presented material from other courses.

This text, which was required for a graduate course I am taking, has excellent resources included to help you with the subject matter. There are internet sites you can visit to get more in-depth on any sections you choose, as well as a supplementary site by the author with extra articles, self-quizzes, etc...The material is a bit dry to read at times, but overall it's interesting and is divided up into sections that make it easier to read.

Statistics is such a tedious and complex subject, and Huck really makes every single subject so clear, readable, understandable, and -- make sure you're sitting -- even a little interesting...!!!! Highly recommended for anyone who is not a stats whiz by any stretch (like me) and needs to understand it! But I could imagine that even a statistics expert would enjoy reading all of these sophisticated concepts laid out so clearly and simply. Thank you, Prof. Huck!

I like this book even I'm not a parent simply because it shows how important is the surrounding in which any of us is raised. Most of the book for raising kids today are very children-centered, like everything is about the child and nothing about the people who raise those children. "Make a compliment!", "Don't judge!", "Give another chance!" - all those books are full of this kind of advice. None of those tells what this one tells first: be the role model for your child. Be the person you want your child to be. And you will raise the child you wanna raise: happy and loved, a child who will become a good person, just like you are. Because you did the job first for yourself and made yourself a good, happy person.The book is easy to read, with a lot of examples from life situations which I really like. A very practical book which you can read and reread when you need advice. For you and for your kid. For both of you to be happy. Also, the book is full of inspirational sentences which make you think what you will do in those situations.All in all, very good book.

I am not a parent, but as a person who is hoping to be one some day, I found this book enlightening. I especially liked the fact that it puts stress on how important a child's environment is for their development. I enjoyed the fact that it covers different stages of childhood and how to approach your child at different ages. I loved the idea that you should be a role model for your child and that you yourself need to be the person you want your child to become. I also found it quite refreshing that the book encourages you to talk to your child as a future adult, rather than some sort of alien life form that has no right to make its own decisions and choices. Overall, a great read for both parents and non-parents alike.

I found this book to be both informative and inspirational. As a parent, I think that this book would be very helpful for new parents, but was also helpful to me as a more experienced parent. It offered a lot of advice and information for parents of children of all ages. It offers tips, and guidelines as well as inspirational sayings. I think that it is well laid out and easy to read. Many of the concepts presented in this book are the same ones that I learned in various parenting classes and educational classes and seminars throughout the years. It is one of those books that you read through once, then go back and re-read as a refresher from time to time. I was very impressed with this book.

I am absolutely in love with this book! I just had my first child who will be a year this month and my husband I have talk about many of the things the book emphasizes. I love the Success Journal Idea and before reading this book I have already started an email account in her name and I send emails and pictures as often as I can.My husband is a teacher and he totally agrees with Vitaly's Points in this book. I wanted to learn some nice ways to raise happy kids. It is true that parenting is not easy; in fact, studying to earn degrees is easier but parenting is not. Sometimes, you need to be kid with your kids, while sometimes, you need to make them learn the importance of staying calm and forgive others for their mistakes. On the same, time you need to help them understand the importance of accepting their mistakes and say Sorry.This book about parenting covers so many aspects. The interesting parts of the book are where you see beautiful quotes on pictures and between the paragraphs. You learn something good from those quotes and can implement in your life to become a good parents. I am going to spend more time with my son after reading this book.

I gave my son and his family this book for Christmas because their 2 year old son is at the stage where he says “WHY NOT” whenever they tell him ‘NO’. They were amused, and also impressed with the content of the book.

I may return it. The smell of the printing ink is so strong, neither my grandson nor I can tolerate it very ling before we start sneezing or have to move away from the book. Its also a heavy larger book so not so easy for small hands or bedtime reading. It is a lovely looking, brightly colored book that is filled with fun information

I don't write many reviews but I had to for this book. It is a modern, easy-to-follow book that covers how to remember nearly everything. I am impressed by the writing and love the illustrations which makes it even easier and more fun to read. The only down side is that I wanted to hear more about the author - a 4 time memory champion - and his journey to success. He covers it briefly in the opening chapter but I would love to hear more stories of memory competitions and the life of a memory athlete. But if you're looking for a book that will give an overview of how to improve your memory in a lot of different areas, this is it!

I have already used the techniques in this book to memorize my credit card number, a list of the first 15 Presidents, and a list of the 10 most populous countries in the world. There are many tricks illustrated in this amusing book, and some seem less useful than others, but overall I think most readers will find something that works for them.

Nelson Dellis manages to take complicated memory techniques and apply them to everyday needs. Already working for me - found the car this weekend in the car park no problem!!

As someone who practices memory methods and has overcome the limitations of a really poor natural memory, I am familiar with a lot of books in this genre. This is one of the best. Nelson Dellis has produced a really lively book to read with totally practical explanations and examples. This book is fun and incredibly useful!

I really enjoyed the techniques that are taught here and how easily they can be applied to learning anything quickly. Using visualization and storytelling is a great way to take information that you want to learn and commit it to long term memory. It's fun and creative and I highly recommend it.

Great memory tips and strategies that are well explained and written in an easy-going and humorous way.

This covers a lot more techniques than some of the similar books. Rather than being entirely a "you can do it" book, it is also very much a state of the art "how to" book.

I have tabbed this book like crazy!! My father in law gave me a fondue pot for my b-day. I remember my mom her friends playing cards listening to Al Green records(am i dating myself?) and eating out of one pot. That was the depth of my experience with fondue. I bought this book so that I would have a clue as to what to do with my gift. I have tried about half of the meat and cheese recipes and the majority have been well recieved. The pictures give it a bit of a dated look but the good simple food transcends the time that has passed since this book was first published. It is simple and easy to follow. This is a great primer for those new to fondue.

The pictures in this book are hilarious, because they are from another era, bless this little book's heart.However, the recipes are quite wonderful and tasty. I have not tried anywhere near the 200 recipes. However, the ones I have tried are excellent! My favorite is the Toblerone Fondue. MMMM! Be sure to save extra room if that is dessert!My friends love when I announce fondue night, and later they ask me for recipes when they host their own. With this book I have more than enough ideas for myself and to share.Also, the book includes raclette recipes. I think that's nice, now that I have a raclette grill.Bottom line is, don't let the pictures get you down or fool you, the recipes and fondue history in this book are great.

I grew up thinking that fondues were just cheese, cheese, cheese, so I leapt at a book that would broaden my understanding. This is exactly that I got in this book. Coverage of various styles may not be deep, but the authors present a sampling of an enormous range of fondue pot uses from various cuisines around the world.A small nit to pick is that the text is somewhat clumsily translated from German, and it pays to read the recipe instructions carefully prior to starting. The instructions are not particularly well segmented and laid out for you to read as you go. Nevertheless, for the one and only fondue cookbook in my collection, this was a great pick.

Great book! Includes some history, alternative names for fondue, serving suggestions, etc.

This book is a scream -- but it's also got some great recipes. It's a scream because it's so "'70s" -- that alone makes it worth the price. It has lots of good recipes and seems quite comprehensive. It covers all sorts of cheese fondue, meat fondue, and court bouillon recipes. It gives plenty of excellent sauce and dip ideas. It gives great ideas about "go withs" so you won't have any trouble thinking of complete fondue-based meals. Plus, you'll be so glad the '70s are long gone!

The book will help with my next party. I am sure I will try it on my family first. I will ad to the review once I try some of them.

Highly recommended to have if you are interested in Fondues. The purchasing source was very low in price for that book.

This is a terrible, overpriced, soft bound cookbook! I can not overstate, TERRIBLE! For Amazon to charge a consumer shiping to and from the seller makes it all the more terrible! I'll certainly thing twice about purchasing a book from Amazon. The Fondue Bible sold by Amazon makes this book look like a comic book.
