I bought this for my brother in law, who is partially blind. The pictures are large and easy for him to see, and the print really is giant. The pages are on substantial paper, and will stand up to the hardiest handling. What is written on the pages is well done and easy to understand. What blew me away were the pictures, graphs and drawings! I want to get one for myself! It is not exhaustive by any means, but it is VERY well done. It would be the perfect gift for a beginning Bible student, or someone who just loves the pictures and wants to know more of the cultures that are int he Bible.

It was even better than my old one and that makes it fantastic!

I'm a bit late in reading and reviewing Jacqueline Winspear's new novel, "To Die but Once: A Maisie Dobbs novel". I'd stopped reading Winspear's series a few years ago when she appeared to lose interest in her character - Maisie Dobbs - and the novels suffered as a result. But her last book seemed to show a sense of renewal , and with this one, Winspear has fully revived her both her main character and the secondary ones.Winspear has moved fully into WW2. Her setting is, of course, London and Kent. It's May, 1940, and the Phoney War has suddenly ended with the German invasion through the Low Countries into France. The British Expeditionary Force has been left stranded on the beaches of northern France, waiting for the German army to push them into the sea. Several people in Maisie's life have sons who are with the BEF and whose very lives are on the line. Will they be rescued, and who will do the rescuing. Maisie and Billy are also looking into the death of a local boy, son of the owners of their local. Was the teenager mixed up in a larger conspiracy? Jacqueline Winspear deftly juggles these stories with a couple more, never losing the plot lines, moving both the plot and Maisie Dobbs' life forward. The book ends as it should.I'd say if you've been disappointed perhaps with several of the latter Dobbs novels, to give this book a good look. I think you'll find it worthy.

I'm late to reading Winspear's work. I discovered Maisie Dobbs in Jan, and started with a book mid-series, read it, and was hooked. Then I got all the books I hadn't read yet and read them all so I was ready for this one. I'm in love with this series, and my thinking on 5-stars reviews is like this: I only give them to either books that I find of great literary importance (which are also to my taste) like Toni Morrison's work, or the work of Jeannette Winterson. But I also give 5 star reviews to books that I simply love by authors that I have an automatic "buy" for when they have a new book come out. Jaqueline Winspear is now on my mystery list (as is Phil Rickman and Barbara Hambly).These books are a rarity in my mind--really well told mysteries that also include phenomenal writing, excellent character development, and in this case, also excellent historical detail (which I why I also love Barbara Hambly's Benjamin January series). I've always been fascinated by this time period as well, and Winspear captures this so well. I've learned a lot about the first world war from reading these series, and the times in between the war as well. Very often, reading one of the Maisie Dobbs books gets me interested enough to do research on things I didn't know much about (Dunkirk, etc) and this was no different. Characters are well-developed and I feel as if Maisie and her friends and family are old friends.Simply put, this is one of the best series of mysteries, particular historical mysteries, that I've ever read. (And I was worried when I started this book that perhaps I was coming in on the end of a series, but I'm happy to report that doesn't seem to be the case!)

Suddenly, on May 10, Hitler's legions rumbled across the borders of Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, and, finally, France. The 300,000-man British Expeditionary Force had been deployed on the Continent to support the French Army. Now, it found itself steadily pushed into a tighter and tighter space along the coast around the French port of Dunkerque (Dunkirk).In the Battle of Dunkirk, the English people finally came to confront the terror of modern war. During ten days in late May and early June, German armies savaged retreating English and French troops and Stuka dive-bombers pounded ships sent to evacuate them. When the Admiralty confessed its inability to save the troops, newly installed Prime Minister Winston Churchill issued an open call for all British seagoing vessels to join the effort. It was recommended to me to read this book, so I ordered it right away. I could only read one chapter a day because I truly was struggling with situations in my life and this book helped me to get through those struggles. By the time I got to chapter 5, I had to start "journaling" somewhat... by writing down questions, feelings & emotions that were very raw for me. After I finished chapter 14 I had to take a break, so a week went by. I began to read Chapter 15 titled "Fair or Life?" and on the top of page 86 that sentence hit me like a brick wall. I read it over and over again to the point of meditating on it. I no longer had to journal; I just read. And I finished the book (22 chapters in all, with a wrap-up at the end) in three more days.My anger has subsided... hopefully gone for good. I have learned how to manage my feelings & emotions, many of my questions were answered. I will re-read this book again in the near future to make sure that I understood that anger is an emotion that needs to be given over time and time again to God, to understanding, to realization... anger only kills me.I have ordered many more books to give them away to family members & friends who I know will benefit from reading it. I also got one for my local library, since I know they do not have one. Only 150 pages long, but packed with so much.

Bill Gothard's approach to effective, fervent prayer reminds me of old fashioned revival meetings and altar calls. The old-timers called out to God in loud voices and prayers were heard, bringing wonderful answers. The American church today has traded passionate prayer for reticent, silent petitions with the result that miracles have become unusual among us. Gothard calls us back to using our voices with biblical examples and quotations to uphold his invitation. Those who read this book, apply its lessons, and believe that our Father God hears should be ready to welcome new power in prayer.

It all boils down to one thing. We need to cry our to God our Heavenly Father for what ever we need. He is always present to help. This book is a good reminder of our amazing Father.

Having experienced the ministry of Bill Gothard as a college student in the mid to late 1970's, I knew this would be an encouraging and faith-challenging book. Often, with the passing of time, we can slip into habits of prayer that miss the fullness of all the Father has for us. What a wonderfully gentle prodding to step out in faith and cry out in faith. As expected, this book was packed with scriptural admonitions.

This is a terrific book on prayer. The real focus is upon one's heart and faith. God always honors His Word. We only must act upon it. It isn't passive. Faith and all it incorporates requires action. Crying out is one of those actions.

This book not only provides an invaluable assessment of how business executives can choose the right assistant to help them achieve their goals, it is also a helpful guide for individuals who want to pursue a career as an executive assistant. Author Jones gives many compelling examples of how real life assistants to such high-powered individuals as Richard Branson, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and John Kennedy, Jr. made a big difference to their bosses, thanks to such skills as diplomacy, resourcefulness and organization. This book could have been titled How to Achieve a Great Business Marriage, because the chemistry and daily interaction between executive and assistant is a lot like a successful peraonal relationship, with much of the same qualities needed.

I met the author and then brought this book to share with my company's senior exec assistant team for discussion at a forum. Not only did this book bring a view of how an exec might utilize an EA, but it can be a playbook for exec assistants to measure their skills, those of their colleagues and their partnerships with execs. Those attending the forum are planning to share with their own EA teams (and their bosses) to raise the bar for this professional role. I'm very pleased with this book.

Jan, who is absolutely the right person to write this book, really gives us CEO's a roadmap.As someone who's founded four international companies, and run three of them, I realize how much the "right hand person" to a CEO can help - or hold back.It blows me away how some biz leaders have assistants who aren't effective. I found Jan's book by chance and I'm glad I did. I've been an administrative professional for 40+ years with half that time working for CEOs. While the book was intended for executives, essentially it is the assistant that trains the executive on how to use them wisely. I am always looking for ways to increase my effectiveness as well as my CEO's. Jan's book gave me the blueprint to follow to do just that.

Wow! I devoured this book in a day and I highly endorse it. As a business leader, I can say this book perfectly encapsulates everything you need to know about finding the right "secret weapon" or "business partner" to dramatically multiply your effectiveness. I was not expecting it to be as good as it was. I definitely learned a lot and I've been founding and leading businesses for 20 years. I will definitely be reading it again!

Loved this book. It helped me a great deal, as an assistant to read from the standpoint of my boss. I used a lot of these tools in my interviews and landed my dream job. A great tool for anyone in this profession, I highly recommend it.
