I did not buy this book on Amazon. I borrowed it from my local library, and I'm glad I did so before buying it. Less than a third of the book addresses painting with acrylic paints. The rest of the book touches here and there on other aspects of creating visual art - drawing, composition, methods for getting a drawing on canvas before painting, and other useful information that has nothing to do with painting with any medium, much less acrylics specifically. I was looking for information on acrylics and how to use them along with tips, tricks, techniques, etc., but I was sorely disappointed.A better title would have been An Overview of Visual Art for Dummies, for that is what it is.

I expected more lessons with how to directions on making some of the paintings in the book. The author gas a lot of examples of things he's talking about, but nothing to teach how to do it.For instance, the first painting he walks through uses items that beginners wouldn't necessarily have. I don't have a rake brush and am not ready to paint with anything other than a few regular brushes of different sizes and shapes. This book is meant for beginners, but was a complete waste of money for me.I used the Learn to paint in 59 small paintings, which is bringing me through different types,of brush control and painting from easy to harder. That was well worth the money. Don't waste your time on this one.

I probably have at least a dozen books on how to paint with acrylics but this one is more helpful and informative than all of the others put together. The instructions are simple to understand and easy to do but the effects are truly creative and varied. The organization is excellent, making it very easy to use. Everything is shown step by step, unlike so many books where you are given a couple of instructions followed by a completed picture...the kind that leave you clueless about the steps it took to get there. The techniques are broken down so that they are very easy to understand but that doesn't mean the effects look simple when finished. There's a multitude of techniques to try as well as demonstrations of brush techniques, kinds of paint mediums and various additives. There are art supplies I never even knew existed that can make very interesting effects. This book differs from others in the "Dummies" series in that there are many colored pictures and illustrations. This book is a pleasure to use.

Highly recommend purchasing this book, especially if you have unanswered questions about acrylics and I have dozens of books regarding acrylic painting.Prior to receiving it I'd searched numerous times seeking answers to different acrylic questions. So far, this book has answered them all and every time I refer to it I learn more than I was looking for.It's a bit different from most of the dummies publications as it has excellent full color illustrations and intelligent content. 5+++ stars on this one!

Most of my painting experience is with watercolors. I've tried oils but, with a short attention span and even less patience, I found the long drying time of oils frustrating unless I was working wet-on-wet all the time (as in "Think Bob Ross"). Plus, cold weather's driven me inside where oil paint fumes drive the cats crazy. I won't mention what my wife thinks about the fumes. I bought this book more for the technical hints on the properties of acrylic paints than for the painting techniques (which as best as I can tell are comparable to the Dummies books on WC and Oils re: techniques which, in turn, compare favorably to most basic "How to Paint with . . ." books). This book met my expectations on the technical side and exceeded my expectations on the techniques side. In addition to helping me decide how to use the technical properties of acrylics to their best advantage, it also helped me figure out how to integrate my oil use and WC use in what the literature calls "mixed media." In short, there were some technical hints as well as technique hints that I could also use in my WC and oil works.

Before you being any project in this book, read completely through the instructions carefully. I tried to do the wolf trading card on p66. The instructions take you about halfway through and then there's a picture of the finished product, with no clue how to finish it. The book does have lots of hints and tricks, but not many step-by-step projects--and those I am hesitant to take on. I am sure there are better books for beginners out there.

I am well-pleased with this book on Acrylic painting. Having just started Acrylic painting, myself, I wanted a reference book that I could use every day to answer simple questions. Like all of the "Dummie" books on other subjects, it is written in simple language, and leads you through the process step by step. Chock full of color illustrations and examples. I'm sure I will be using this book a lot in the years to come.Very high quality and well worth the price.

Like the other "For Dummies" books. A lot of information, but not really a manual for teaching you how to paint if you are truly an absolute beginner.

I've only perused it a few times but there is a LOT of information in this book. I'm really glad I ordered it and I'm sure I will learn much. I've already found out lots about different textures I can add to my paint/paintings. It should be very interesting putting it into use. Glad I got it!

As a Vietnam visitor beginning in 1996, and a former semi-expat there, I have huge respect for Graham's work and for his former blog Noodlepie. What a great thing he's done in uncovering the culinary delights of Vietnamese food and in particular, the "street food" of the (formerly) ubiquitous carts and streetside sellers of Saigon. (As an aside, in my early trips there, I always ate from the street sellers and sat on their teeny plastic stools without hesitation, and like Graham I was normally the only Westerner at any given cart or hole-in-the-wall restaurant. But in no way did I do this with the focus and determination that Graham did with Noodlepie.)In any case, this book is a departure from those excellent exploratory missions. It's more of a story about how Graham came to develop the Noodlepie blog, and why. For me - a reader of the blog for years - it's an interesting background story and it may also be very interesting to those not familiar with Noodlepie. It's very well written, engaging, and provides a lot of insight into the cuisine of Vietnam, particularly what makes it so unique and so great.Unfortunately - and as Graham anticipates in the book - most of the streetside food sellers of downtown Saigon have been pushed off the streets and sidewalks and into storefronts or restaurants if they're to be found anywhere at all. That's a shame - although Vietnamese of my acquaintance think it's a good thing and that ridding the downtown streets of Ma and Pa food carts makes the city more advanced and "sophisticated". Still, on a very recent trip I very much missed the early morning pho carts at the back of the Hotel Rex, and I couldn't find a decent streetside bahn mi anywhere in District 1. Truly disappointing, and something that Graham discusses in this book.But all is not lost, and there's a good book or blog to be written yet again. Because outside of Saigon's District 1, and venturing further into the ex-urban and rural streets of Southern Vietnam, there remains a thriving and ubiquitous street food market that offers everything and anything formerly offered in Saigon, and much that is not. I kind of wish that Graham had ventured 20 kilometers outside of Saigon to write about those places, which as before are ubiquitous, awesomely good, and cheap. There is little question that the people of Vietnam still love excellent and tasty cuisine. I wish Graham had written a little more about those places.

I read this book in two days, despite work and at the expense of sleep. There are flaws: it sometimes feels disconnected, and there's no real narrative arc as it's the chronicle of someone chasing their white whale over a period of ten years. Still, it is the only Vietnam travel book that I have read that treated the place with real respect, a lack of pseudo-mysticism, and also managed to teach me about new dishes I haven't tried. My wife's reaction: "Oh? Yeah, I guess you really haven't tried that. It's a Hà Nội dish."I don't understand the criticisms of the author in some reviews on Goodreads, saying that he treated the Vietnamese "paternalistically" or that he fits the stereotype of the "white traveler." It does disappoint me that he didn't learn more of the language during his time there--at one point he said that he didn't learn what "mang" meant in mang đi về--but it seems a bit silly to criticize him as though he is simply a tourist with no connection to the place.

As a Vietnamese living abroad, I am always curious about others' experience and perception of Vietnamese culture. I have to say, I enjoyed reading Mr. Holliday's book very much. His observation of street food culture in Vietnam is both accurate and hilarious. I thoroughly enjoyed the chapter about the cultural differences between North and South. My parents were from the North, but I was born and raised in the South, and the difference between North and South’s cooking philosophy permeated in every home cooked meal. They would diligently explain how the same dish was cooked differently in each region. Street food was an important part of any Vietnamese growing up. Reading Mr. Holliday’s book brought back a lot of happy memories of the olden days. Although, I would say that this book is strictly about street food. Most of the dishes that the author held dear to his heart are not easily replicate at home (both for the economical and taste reasons). Two important parts of Vietnamese cuisine that Mr. Holliday didn't explore are the Hue cuisine (imperial cuisine as well as street food), and Vietnamese home cooking. He readily admitted that in his book. Vietnamese home cooking is rich in varieties and taste. Hue’s cuisine is more complicated and time consuming in the preparation process, which, in my experience, makes it hard to find a decent restaurant outside of Vietnam that can recreate the taste. I am sad that Mr. Holliday left Vietnam before he could explore these parts of our cuisine. His curiosity, couples with the journalistic due diligence he did in learning about the food sources and culture transpire in this book. He delivers a fair and accurate view of a part of our culture that a native Vietnamese like me can appreciate. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about Vietnam.

Whether it is your first time in Viet Nam or your next time, this is a guide that can unlock some of the mysteries of Vietnamese street food. Entertaining, informative and passionate, the author does a wonderful job of boldly going down the alleyways and peeking under the pot lids that many are too intimidated to do themselves. I have traveled to Viet Nam and have been lucky enough to have patient and informative local guides to show me the good, the bad and the quintessential dishes of this vibrant culture. This book brought back amazing tastes, warm encounters and funny faux pas I have experienced over the years. For better and for worse, I am richer for the experiences and flavors of my travels in Viet Nam. I feel the same about this book. Thank you Mr. Holliday! I am going to Viet Nam this Fall with my wife and a niece who have never been there and I am re-reading the book to take notes on specific foods and locations in Hanoi. The places might change but I share the authors wish that the menu will be eternal. Chuc suc khoe!

Great book and great author. This book continues to be one of my daughter's favorites from 2 to 4. This is a simple board book, with drawings of different types of trains (old and modern), the names of the trains, and the sounds they make. You should also check out other books written and illustrated by this author. You will love them all!

I work at the library and do storytimes for babies and toddlers, and Steve Light's books ALWAYS go over well with the littles! The fun sounds are easy to get carried away with, and the bold letters and illustrations work perfectly with the long shape of the book. I adore the whole series!

We checked this book out from the library but unfortunately had to return it. My 14-month-old wants us to read this again and again now that we own it. The original vendor sent the wrong book but refunded our payment and let us keep the college textbook they sent by mistake. Once we ordered it from Amazon with Prime shipping, it got here in the requested two days in great shape along with another book.The pictures and onomatopoeias are very engaging and my son is starting to get the sounds down by himself. Every time he sees a train now he says "ding ding!". We also own "Trucks Go" by Steve Light and he loves that one too.

My son is a big fan of the Steve Light books...we already have Planes Go and Diggers Go. He's recently become enamored by trains! So when I saw there was a Trains Go book too, we had to get it! The pictures are big and bright, the sound effects makes my son laugh, and he loves to flip through the book on his own and look at the photos and makes his own sounds.

I love this series and Trains Go is one of the best! We have all of them and my son still asks to be read them at 4.5. The lay out and illustrations are genius! Our other faves are: Diggers go and Planes go, but they are all worth buying.

We take care of our precious grandson during the week. We have been reading to him since he was two months old. He has enjoyed it from the start. I'm always on the lookout for a durable, well-illustrated, interesting book. I read the reviews on Trains Go and thought it might be a good addition to our library. Excellent choice!!! He is 7 mo & LOVES this book. When you are reading to him he turns to look at you when you make the sounds. The look of delight on his face is priceless. The book measures about 12" wide by 6" high. Each page as a colorful illustration of a type of train and the sound it makes. This is the time to really let your inner vocal talents out. When that "zoooooooooshshshshshshshsh" sound appears on the page in smaller, then gradually bigger, then gradually smaller letters, give it all the softness and loudness and length it deserves. Your listener will reward your effort with an irresistible smile time after time. Then....read it again!

We bought this for our 20 month old toddler, along with a train set, for Christmas. He loves this book! It's very simple and focuses on the sounds each train make, not much real vocabulary, which is fine because he has many other books for that purpose. It's just overall a lot of fun! He especially enjoys the speed train going "Whoooooooooshhhhh!". His friends who come over love this book, too!

My little one loved the book so much after read it from library, got it without thinking twice. Good silly story book time!

If you don’t know Tagalog at all, I suggest starting with the beginner version of this book. As an aspiring ESL teacher, I really enjoyed the way this workbook was set up. I have been experimenting with different brands of language learning books and CD programs and I have to say this is top five!

I ordered this book "used" and it was brand new and untouched. Taught me how to speak Tagalog/Filipino a bit better, too, for my classes. Salamat po!
