A very accessible, easily-readable account of the past, present, and future of transit throughout the US and the rest of the world. I especially enjoyed the anecdotes surrounding New York City, an area which Schwartz, also known as "Gridlock Sam," has much personal experience as Traffic Commissioner.The first half of the book is historical: expect to learn about the great engineering marvel and transportation failure of Robert Moses' Cross-Bronx Expressway, the political and economic reasons (as opposed to the oft-cited social reasons) behind the 50s white flight phenomenon, and other fascinating stories concerning the past 100 years of transit development. Schwartz's magic in this section is the "behind the scenes" perspective, prompting the casual reader (such as myself) to think about the issues like a transportation engineer rather than like a consumer.The second half of the book concerns the future, and does so by describing unique aspects of transit systems and traffic planning in other cities throughout the country, peppered with anecdotes from Schwartz's work as a consultant. Although I found this portion a little weaker than the NYC historical review (though I admit I am a biased reader who purchased the book out of interest in NYC's infrastructure), it was interesting to learn about the transit systems in other cities. The section about self-driving cars was especially insightful, for the same reasons as the historical portion -- it approached the topic from the perspective of a transportation engineer rather than the perspective of a technologist or consumer.The reasons I didn't rate the book 5 stars were: I found the section on Millenials and the benefits of walking a little bit unnecessarily long, although I understand why Schwartz would include it assuming an older target audience. I also would have appreciated more details, both historical and technical, in some sections, even if those details risk boring or alienating a more casual reader.If you're looking for a very easy to read introduction to the broad world of transportation and its political, social, and economic state within the country (or specifically NYC), then I highly recommend this book. If you're looking for a detailed introduction to transportation engineering, this might not be the right place to begin, although it might serve as motivational material to dig deeper.

The author does a great job of combining in-depth technical language without suffering from a dry writing style.In regards to content, his descriptions are thorough and open minded. Despite what many may think, the book is not a complete attack on cars, but rather an exploration of the benefits of reducing car presence in densely populated areas and making other forms of transportation more appealing. He still acknowledges the role cars fill and their importance to the transportation sector.I would recommend this book to anyone who's curious in how transportation works in a city, places with state of the art transportation systems, and what the future of commuting and traveling can be.

I haven't quite finished reading it yet, but so far I'm enjoying it a lot. Most of the time, books on such topics are about as engrossing to read as watching paint dry. However, Schwartz makes it interesting. He describes how cities got into the fix they're in and how they're getting themselves out of it. If you live in a city (and in the US that's over half of us) get this book. I recommend it highly.

I greatly enjoyed this book. The author is knowledgeable and has a great deal of professional experience with the subject matter. The writing is crisp and clean, and reads easily. Stories and personalization of the topics addressed make it entertaining reading as well as informative. Highly recommended.

This book was an eye-opener. I think the biggest thing for me was how it addressed autonomous vehicles or driverless cars and how they are not the solution that so many people think they are, that is, without effective integrated transit systems to collaborate along side them.

Great lessons from one of the nation's most prominant traffic engineers on congestion, sprawl and why we need to do something about them. As a Cleveland, Ohio cyclist, I found it insightful, but as a taxpayer I found it compelling. We can't afford unbridled highway expansion, when we can't maintain and repair what we already have.

I am not sure where does all these 5 stars come from. Maybe they are the author's friends?I have bought hundreds of books online and this is first book I feel obligated to give a one star. I am shocked by the irresponsibility by the author.Typos and mistakes are everywhere. Some times you can find more than ten typos in a page. In some sections every r2 is printed as r6. Some sections every '1' is printed as '2'. (I am not sure if the author is capable of counting from 0 to 9)To give you an example, let's see how the author solves the problem "counting the number of 1-bits in a 32 bit integer". Savor the masterpiece:// Count the number of ones in x// Result saved in counterint main(void) { unsigned int x=0xAAAAAAAA; unsigned int y, z; unsigned int counter = 0; counter = x >> 31; while(x > 0) { y = x << 2; z = y >> 31; if (x < y) { counter += z + 1; } else { counter += z; } x = y; } while(1)}I cannot tell you what's wrong with this program because I have no idea how the author's mind works. The author uses 2 pages to give you a detailed explanation of how that masterpiece generates a 16. Yes indeed 0xAAAAAAAA does have 16 ones in it. However the award winning piece also tells you 0xFFFFFFFF has 16 ones in it and 0x22222222 has 16 ones in it. Actually I would rather call this "program" a "16-generator".So I just want to give you an simple. Don't take it too serious. These kind of masterpieces is every in the book. I think it may take me 60-150 pages of A4 pages to list them all.This book is also "amazing" because the author can use two pages to explain something that can be explained by two lines, without giving you a clear idea what he is talking about. However, he can also use several characters to explain something that deserves some examples. Not a bad book for beginners but important or subtle details are often unclear/not well explained/totally absent. In addition, there are numerous typos in almost every chapter, some of which are extremely difficult to spot without knowing the answer in advance. This made learning new concepts way more difficult than it had to be, since I always had to second guess whether my reaction/intuition was wrong, or if the textbook simply made a mistake.

Though it still has a few flaws to be worked out, this book is a great guide to get started on learning about Embedded Systems. I highly recommend using the Discover Board and following along with the labs so that you can get a better grasp of how it all works. Definitely not a beginner's book–a decent working knowledge of C programming is highly recommended. Additionally, use the resources the author provides on his book website! [...]Overall, I enjoyed the text and learned a great deal from it. I'm sure I will be referencing it in the future as I continue with other projects.

I have been an embedded design engineer since 1990, just before the introduction cell phones. A lot has changed and some things remained the same. This is a great book and easy to understand especially if your new to embedded engineering.

i full recommend this book to any starting embedded engineers. clearly, arm is taking traction, beyond mobile, iot and arm controllers are everywhere, it's a must to read if want to go beyond (and below) c, c++ (and trust me, you do!)

I want to know who told this author to write this book because frankly it is not concise or clear on its content. The author doesn't have any kind of instruction on how the book is intended to be used in a classroom setting, its merely informational from the authors own understanding of embedded systems. Also, a lot of text in this book is merely being used to fill pages rather than having purpose. I'm sorry if your class uses this book, be prepared to slam your head onto book because that's really all its good for.

Volume three is a step down from the traditional shameless fun Preacher is known for, as a number of flaws in the writing drag it down. Your mileage may vary on this, but let me explain.First, this volume gets dominated by flashbacks. The first is the 100 page special on the origin of the Saint of killers. The next was a normal issue of Cassidy encountering another vampire (after the two flashbacks from the last volume). Don't get me wrong, neither of these flashbacks was bad per se, it's just that all of this backstory torched the pacing.The bigger problem was the new twist that gets introduced as soon as we get back from the flashbacks. A new revelation by Cassidy comes out of nowhere to screw with the character dynamics. I don't buy it existing, and it just throws the whole story off it's axis.Now, let me be clear. All the usual great dialogue and humor is still in this volumes. But the flaws are there, and hopefully get corrected in volume four.

I hadn't read this in a long time. it was good to experience this world again. ona digital format makes traveling for work a perk. Yeah I'm probably the late thirties guy in jeans and sport coat reading comics next to you int he terminal or on the flight. Comics... nope. GRAPHIC NOVELS. lol.Volume three I think has some of the most amazing story arcs in the preacher storyline, right there with volume 2. If you like hte TV show, you love the first 3 volumes and see how tame that in your face show is compared to the 'Comic'. lol.And a great story line where cassidy basically calls Anne Rices vampire motive the twilight of the grunge generation (and so right)

Preacher is my favorite vertigo title of all time. I don't even remember why I bought the first issue, but I'm glad I did. The story of Jesse Custer, girlfriend Tulip and friend vampire, Cassidy, it's the simple story of a man's search for God. Not the spiritual way, but actual God. And that all I can say. Get it. Read it. It's not for everyone, and it helps if one has a warped sense of humor, but it's worth reading! Again and again and again.

A nice reading. Its a 90s comic and great if you were between 15 and 20 during that time. The story its not great but you will get a lot of laughs. I recommend the tpb, the deluxe version its more expensive but you should bought it only if you already had read this and loved it. Its not even oversized

I was a big fan of this book as it was first released. There was nothing else like it on the market. After watching the TV show I decided to re-read it and instead of digging through all my long boxes I just bought the digital versions.Insane in all the best ways

Background on all the characters is well fleshed out and at a good pace. It's weird at times seeing concepts like God and the devil anthropomorphized but that's part of the game for Preacher. Everyone should be held accountable for their actions.

Preacher is one of the most unique GN's to come out in a while.But with Garth Ennis and Steve Dillion at the helm...i'd expect nothing less!I found this book especially compelling because the focus was on the S.O.K'sand his story....I'm partial to westerns .Great storyline, i'm on book 4 and it just continues to impress.Kudos to Garth Steve and Vertigo!

This comic series did not age as well as I had hoped. I read it back when I was a bit more juvenile, and I loved every minute of it. Now that I'm older and a bit more mature, I was definitely put off a little bit by the disgusting manner of the main characters and the heavy handed nature of the social and religious commentary.

Got hooked on the series and now reading the original. The series is more compact, the comic book opens up the whole story

I had expected to read a hard to read diary in old English with detailed midwife adventures. What I got was such a wonderful surprise! Yes, it is a diary with old English spellings but it was not hard to read. However, the best part is the explanations by the author. As she ties in another diary of that time long with so much research into every type of document left from that era, you come to know the people of the town and their lifestyles. This book is greAt and completely fascinating.

Unquestionably the greatest dive into histoy I’ve ever read. If you want to have a first hand look at life as it really was in the 18th century you must read this. Personally, it amazed me to see how the author could take excerpts along with other historical documents to create a full picture of economic life, social life, family life, etcYou feel like you go back in time and live this. I never understood just how hard it was to simply put food on the table for the average American. Life was about survival. It is so easily understood and felt in the book.

I loved this book so much! This is one of those fascinating histories that I couldn't put down! I loved how real Martha was, and the author's skill in keeping her real--her gifts, faith, and faults alike. I loved how the chapters were comprised of different themes and pulled apart the history into those themes so it was easy to follow through the history. This book is so skillfully written and exhaustively researched. It is such a masterpiece. What a wonderful book!

Great book. Much needed type of history that reconstructs the importance of women's role in society in a period when women did not write much. This historian pieces together evidence of what women's lives were like from all sorts of historical evidence, beyond or between the lines of traditional records. She really looks at the documents and "sees" what so many historians before her neglected or minimized.

This is the most amazing book. It will make you realize that the history you learned in school was very different than what was really going on.It will open your eyes to the everyday hardships of Augusta Maine in the late 1700. It was a wonder that not only did people survive, but that this midwife had the same infant survival rate that we have now. I highly recommend this book. The only comment is that around the fourth chapter, the author explains the economics of the time. It reads like someone's thesis. Please stick it out or skip to the next chapter, it will be worth your while.

Wonderfully interesting--the author intersperses transcriptions of Martha Ballard's original diary with historical context and commentary on the themes contained therein. I always find histories about everyday lives so much more engaging than the "great men" models of history, and this book decidedly explores the largely unwritten parts of our past.

I had to purchase this book for my Women In US History 1600-1880 class. I planned on selling it or giving it away after my class was over but I ended up loving it. Martha's journal has played such a huge role in US history and given us a peak into ordinary and extraordinary tasks in a woman's life 200+ years ago. Laurel's facts and insight really help, as the hand writing and speech were so very different from today's. Wonderful read!

What an astonishing picture of life in early America emerges from this diary and the research that was done to make sense of it. I am amazed at the independence and courage of Martha Ballard and grateful for the glimpse into her life and the lives of her neighbors and friends.

Very weak on the content side, for a paperback. I did not want the Kindle version for travel convenience, and frankly it would be overpriced if you paid the digital cost. Content is simplistic, and seems like something that was developed for a blog. While there are ideas that seem interesting, too much of the 74 pages is spent on hyping side trips that seem to be hustling for a few tour operators. Even the interesting suggestions are not unique and can be retrieved with a hour or two of web surfing.While 74 pages isn't a lot to start with, the font size is quite large and the layout leaves too much white space. Overall the content could fit in 40 pages with some crisp editing. One major oversight is the lack of even simple, maps. There is no concept of distance, and this was most noticeable in the Sicily section (its not a small island).Overall I'd suggest readers pass on the book. Spending twice as much on other tour books will get you twenty times times the content.
