It is bad enough for the enemy to be shooting at you, but if your anti tank gunners or ground attack aircraft shoot at you it is considered very bad form.To me, the most amazing fact about this book is that it exists at all and with so many photographs that cover a hundred years of history. Well, he says a hundred years, 1903-2003, but actually the first pictures and discussions start with painting identifying signals on the tanks used in World War I. On the other hand, he reports that Lord Nelson had the mast footings on his ships painted in an identifying pattern to make them easy to identify.In addition to these kind of recognition signals, other types of signage is also covered from unit identifications to some indication of service to be performed by that unit such as an ambulance or a vehicle used by general officers.
