This is a great book for a sometimes Spanish speaker looking to teach her child. The book has words and sentences. It teaches you parts of the body with very specific places (ie. head then eyebrow, cheek, etc. and also colors, textures, length of hair, eye colors, etc.) It also teaches you some action words that you do with your body (walk, crawl, dance, etc.) It is very comprehensive and easy to learn. I love it.

I love stories like this: once-well known news events, made obscure by the passing of decades, but brought back to life by a talented researcher and writer. This is one of the most fascinating stories I have ever read, with lessons for all – but particularly for people claiming to be art experts.In 1938, a mildly popular Dutch artist named Han van Meegeren, frustrated by the lack of acclaim that his own art should have generated, decided to show that he was the equivalent of the great Dutch masters of the past. After long research and testing of paints, styles, and aging techniques he produced a painting that appeared to be a previously unseen work of one of the very greatest painters: Johannes Vermeer, who lived more than 200 years earlier. Vermeer’s most famous painting to most of us today is *The Girl with the Pearl Earring.* Van Meegeren’s forgery was entitled *Christ at Emmaus.* Even though today we might say the picture looks nothing like a real Vermeer, many art experts of the time fell all over themselves praising it. The painting sold for the equivalent of several million dollars in today’s money. Van Meegeren painted and sold several more fakes and made millions more.He might have gotten away with it and we might still have these lower-quality paintings hanging in major museums today, labeled as the works of a master, if he hadn’t run into some misfortune. He sold one of the fakes to Adolph Hitler and one to Hitler’s second-in-command, Hermann Goering. It wasn’t the Nazis who got him in trouble. No, Hitler and Goering were happily taken in by the forgeries. But when the war ended and American, English, and French art experts began going through all of thousands of pieces of museum art bought or stolen by the Nazis, they found these supposedly priceless “Vermeers.” And the one in Goering’s collection listed Han van Meegeren as the seller.Van Meegeren was facing charges of treason and possible execution for collaboration with the Nazis. His only way out was to confess to the forgeries. But now no one would believe him. Even after Van Meegeren showed all of his techniques to the police and art investigators looking into the case, the art critics and the people who had come to love the forgeries would not believe they were anything but real. Van Meegeren was forced to paint another fake in front of witnesses in order to save his life. This is really several books in one. It includes discussion of the real Vermeer and why he is so popular today and a biography of the forger van Meegeren. But it also includes a history of the Nazis’ looting of Europe and a brief biography of Goering. It is also a history of art forgery and a discussion of the inventive techniques used by van Meegeren, including using Bakelite (the world’s first synthetic plastic) to artificially age the paintings. Finally it is a study of how easy it is to fool all of us and why it is often easier to fool “experts” than people with little knowledge of the subject.

I was not familiar with the story of the Dutch forger, Han Van Meegeren who made millions before and during WWII from his forged paintings, primarily Vermeers. These were not copies of existing paintings, but creations of his own. His undoing after the war came as a result of a forgery he sold to Goering, which led to his being investigated as a collaborator. He decided it would be better to confess to his forgeries than to be tried as a collaborator. However, he had a hard time getting anyone to believe that he had produced paintings that had been hailed by important experts as real Vermeers. This is a terrific book, which is well-written and brings together many different strands. There is, of course, simply the story of Van Meegeren, which includes the very interesting technical aspects of how he was able to produce paintings that would pass scientific tests to determine if the works were in fact centuries old. The book describes at length the situation in Holland under the Nazis, as well as Goering's and Hitler's obsession with acquiring all of the great art in Europe, either purchasing it with confiscated money or confiscating the art itself. The scale of their plundering was astounding. At times, Goering's seems to have focused more on these acquisitions than on the conduct of the war, to the possible detriment of the Nazi war effort. Dolnick also goes into the psychology of the forger, as well as of the experts who were duped. Altogether, a wonderful book.Jon

I liked this intriguing story so much I ended up buying multiple other copies for artist friends. Great background info on the historical context of Holland during WWII. Insightful portrait of Goring and his incredible stash of art loot. The amazing story of the U.S.. soldiers known as "the Monuments Men" was much more informative than the recent film of the same name. The perpetrator of the frauds, Hans Van Meegeren himself was well portrayed--a fascinating, complex artist arrested for treason but who ended up as a national hero in the bizarre psychological twists and turns author Edward Dolnick so lucidly depicts. I found this book a real page-turner! Highly recommend for anyone interested in the Nazi looting of art treasures during WWII, the Monuments Men or the high-stakes world of art dealing.

This enjoyable, discursive, informative book is a great read. Author Edward Dolnick is a journalist and like all good journalists he has a wide range of interests and is a quick study. The book's topic is nominally Han van Meegeren, a Dutch painter who worked from just after the First World War until just after the Second World War. Although he was competent and made a decent living from his work, the art critics of the day panned his work for being simpering and shallow. So, to make a long story short, he took to forgery, with his main focus being the 17th Century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. This was a bold choice, because only around three dozen Vermeers are known, and were known in the 1930s when van Meegeren started his forgeries. The book discusses van Meegeren's techniques and choices, but also discusses the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany and especially Hermann Goering, the Reichsmarschall, second in command to Hitler. In fact, both collected immense amounts of art and sometimes Hitler took what Goering had wanted. It turns out that Goering ended up with one of van Meegeren's "Vermeers," which leads the story into many interesting twists and turns. There are many other sidelights, including the Getty Museum's purchase of a famous, extremely expensive, and fake kouros, a supposedly a Greek statue, as well as stories about other fakes, forgeries, and copies. It is a terrific book and I recommend it highly.

This book was worth reading, but not engrossing. I liked how it told the story of WWII art collected by the Nazis, and Van Meegeren. I learned more about Vermeer too, but it was hard to identify with the people involved. It lacked passion and emotion to me.

How did the ancient Egyptians manage to build such a structure with the tools and human resources at their disposal? In this rather dull book, construction engineer Smith imagines the building of the pyramid as if it were a modern construction project. He lays out the building plans (speculating based on evidence that the Egyptians had plans, scale drawings and models) and the work schedules that Pharaoh Khufu—whose burial tomb the pyramid was—would have needed. Smith examines the evolution of pyramid design to demonstrate that the builders of the Great Pyramid learned to avoid the flaws of earlier models such as the step pyramid. But like others, Smith can only take an educated guess as to how the massive stones were lifted hundreds of meters into place—with ramps. Within these parameters, Smith, a public works engineer by profession, produces a fascinating scenario for the erection circa 2550 B.C.E. of the Great Pyramid of Khufu. Smith assumes that a project manager directed affairs; he reasonably speculates that this was Khufu's vizier, Hemiunu. Smith converts material descriptions and mathematical calculations into an almost audible narrative, so that readers hear Hemiunu think aloud as he reflects on the defects of previous pyramids and plans out a monument to impress the gods and astound posterity. Craig Smith is a construction management professional whose visits to see the Great Pyramid piqued his interest in how a massive project like this was built.Using modern CM tools, he has convinved me, also a construction person, that this pyramid was built using the best construction methods and, having the superior contractors, engineers, and architects that Egypt had 4600 years ago, the pyramid was completed in just 8 years. Some of the highlights of the book are: the workers were not slaves, all the materials furnished were "just in time," and a Necropolis more enormous than the pyramid was built next to it, and hardly a trace remains.

The reader will have one question in mind after finishing "How the Great Pyramid Was Built": is this a book about Ancient Egypt, utilizing the tools of project management? Or a book about project management, using the Great Pyramid as an extended example? However, the answer is probably moot. Both project managers and Egyptophiles will gain excellent insights from reading Craig Smith's book. Dr. Zahi Hawass, the director of the Supreme Council of Antiquities in Egypt, provides the foreword. The analysis of the necessary infrastructure and the organization of the workforce is throrough and engrossing.This book is not for the alternative theorist, but rather for the historically- and archaeologically-minded reader. One minor quibble: Smith appears to assume that the Egyptians knew that a triangle with sides of unit length 3, 4, and 5 would form a right triangle, whereas Richard Gillings (Mathematics in the Time of the Pharaohs) firmly rejects this notion. Still, they would seem to have had some sort of square or carpenter's ell. The first chapter, a general historical survey of ancient Egypt, does not add anything new, but is a good reminder for the casual reader and serves to anchor the building of the Great Pyramid in its historical era. All in all, a fascinating analysis that belongs on the shelves of both project managers and those interested in Egypt's most famous monument.

This is a very interesting and thoughtful book. In largepart, it is engaging and well written, and the author hasdone a lot of background research, analysis, and carefulthinking. The book presents very interesting material, andcarefully justified speculations.In the end, I find the ramp scenario implausible, at leastas the major method of lifting most of the stones. There areseveral reasons for my skepticism, but one is this: theauthor's ramp scenario involves, for example (cf. p. 182) atcourse 9, 34 teams side by side, 12 teams in sequence, and42 laborers per team, for a total of 34x12x42=17,136 men onthe ramp at one time ... this sounds rather impractical.Unless I've misunderstood, there is also an importanttechnical error in the analysis: On p. 211 it is mentionedparenthetically that the author assumed friction increased therequired force by 50%, and a footnote explains thatthis arises from assuming a friction coefficient 0.5. Butthis friction coefficient would mean that the friction forceis half the normal force, which for the assumed slope of 1:6is close to the weight of the block. So the friction forceis about half the weight, whereas the tangential componentof the gravitational force is around 1/6 the weight.That is, rather than 50 percent more work, friction adds300 percent more work.

This looked like it had been a bestseller so I thought I'd try it. Although it was easy enough to read and had no bad grammar or typos, the style is very "flat" and reads more like stage directions than a novel. The author does more "telling" than "showing" if you know what that means. None of the characters are likeable or sympathetic, so the only suspense is to find out "who done it" -- and, again, I didn't care much, beyond mild curiosity. Also, there seemed to be a loose plot thread at the end, that was never explained. A key piece of evidence just seems to go away and the police ignore an obvious witness/suspect. There is also a final twist that the author must have thought would be shocking, but it seems like she had no other idea for how to end the story. If you want a quick read without deep emotional depth or artistic style, you might like it.

Marco and Anne are invited to a dinner party at the home of their next door neighbors Cynthia and Graham. They get a baby sitter for their baby daughter Cora. The sitter on the day of the dinner party cancels at the last minute. Anne really did not want to go to the party so she tell Marco that she will stay home with baby Cora. Marco somehow convinces her that they can both still go to the dinner party. All they have to do is every half hour one of them will go home and check on Cora, and they will also take the baby monitor.They stay later than Anne wanted to and when she goes to check on baby Cora the crib is empty. The police immediately suspect that one or both of them are involved in the disappearance of Cora. As they investigated they soon discover that both of them have secrets that they are not telling each other. Each time that I thought that I had figure out who took baby Cora I was wrong. Every chapter of this book brought more twists and turns. That kept me on the edge of my seat and turning the page to find out what was going to happen next. The ending is not to be missed

There were many good things in this novel; it was suspenseful, fast-paced and slightly unpredicable at times. The story and plot kept me engaged.The writing was mediocre. I found myself becoming frustrated with the "third person" style narrative. When the narration is something the reader repeatedly thinks about, it's probably not a good thing. Narration is something that shouldn't be noticed, but the way this book was written, I noticed it a LOT.There was not one likeable character, not one. It's hard to get excited about a book when you really don't care what happens to the characters. As for the plot, it wasn't anything new - quite predicable.Once everything comes together, the story becomes a bit nonsensical. There is no way the dad would get off scot-free. There are also several characters introduced that never get developed (the husband of the neighbor is one) as well as side stories that never get resolved. There are several loose ends, and that drives me nuts.I've not read anything by this author previously, and I probably wouldn't read another of her books. With that said, the book was good enough to be worth the time.

I read a lot of books, and really have trouble finding fiction that isn't the same old detective murder stories. I thought this was a great story with a lot of twists that I didn't see coming. It would be hard to talk about the book without giving some of the plot away, but it kept me reading, and was truly hard to put down. I usually read from 11 pm until about 1 am, then go to bed. I ended up staying up until about 2 am or later each night trying to find out what was going to happen next. I thought the book was very well written and easy to read. As soon as I finished it, I found another Shari Lapena book to start.

I hate books like this: no redeeming characters, surprising twists that aren’t really surprising at all, and dull, unimaginative prose. This just isn’t a good book.

The writing style is painfully simplistic. Subject-verb-object. Subject-verb-object. It seems 9 out of 10 sentences begins with a name."Marco sits down. Marco is tired. Marco is trying to think. Anne gazes out the window. Anne is sad. Anne and Marco sit in silence."That's not actually from the book, but it might as well be. It's as if the author has no formal education beyond grade school.The plot is not original by any means. The characters are shallow because they are all described in short, simple sentences. "Anne came from money. Marco did not."I can't believe I paid $13 for this book. Not worth it.
