I had not finished reading Richmond P. Hobson Jr's first book, "Grass Beyond the Mountains" before I ordered his second in the series, "Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy." And then I could hardly wait until the last in the series arrived, "the Rancher Takes a Wife."I was disappointed when I finished this book. I'm an underliner and margin note writer in most of my books. While I participated in a real cattle drive and branding while living in Sheridan, WY, riding my own horse, I do not have the courage and commitment, the inner strength to live the life that the real people in these books did.Throughout this book, I kept waiting for his new bride, Gloria, to say "I've had it. It's me or this ranch!" Wow, did my admiration of this woman rise to super heights as I saw her skin turn white from frost bite, was surprised time and again by her fabulous positive attitude, but wanted to scream at her during the occasions when she almost got them killed. When she faced eight Grizzlies alone, my heart rate was higher than it is when I exercise on our Recumbent exerciser. She had an awesome sense of humor. It's almost impossible for me to rank a top choice from among all these three books! They are just fantastic! Well written, but with a down-home manner of describing impossible situations that had the hair standing up on the back of my neck. I have an entirely new look and admiration that rises 30,000 feet for these real cowboys who lived and survived in 70 below zero blizzards, driving cattle at night, facing the giant black wolves, and grizzlies, and charging moose and scores of other dangers, life-threatening injuries and sicknesses, and return to their carved-out - by hand I might add - home and ranch in a wilderness beyond my imagination to picture, the wilds of northern British Columbia during the years before and after my birth. These were real men and real woman!I wish every American family could read this series of three books by the man who lived it all, Richmond P. Hobson Jr.Read these books and I'm sure you'll agree with me that even my toughest Hollywood actor cowboys, would bow and be awe struck with the tough-beyond-words reality displayed in these exciting, thrilling, shocking and inspiring series. The Rancher Takes a Wife is like the cimbals and drums crashing at the end of a grand orchestral symphony! Hobson pulled out all stops on this last volume. If you want to read these, please begin with the first in the series, for the true historical setting and the unimaginable setting where two cowboy pardners search out the millions of acres they decide to build a cattle empire on, all by themselves! It is a series and the flow of the true story follows the order. Otherwise while you'll enjoy The Rancher Takes a Wife, you'll have questions unanswered that only the first two volumns do answer.Be prepared to get joyfully lost in excitement and amazement. And if you're not married yet, I sure hope you can find a woman half as tough as Gloria, the wife this rancher took.
Hobson's books are excellent. Couldn't put them down. The descriptions of the area and the times (1930s) take you right there without being overdone. The personalities of the rugged characters and antics of men, horses, cows, dogs, etc. are highly entertaining while the hardships they endured would astonish even the most hardy of today's adventurers. Hobson organizes and writes very well yet in a manner that just tells his story. He doesn't bore us with the over-our-heads messages or overused social justice cliches modern day writers use trying to impress the Nobel committee, literary scholars or the NYT. Genuine, down to earth fascinating and unique adventure. I read a lot. A whole lot. If I were a school teacher I'd read them to my students and guarantee they couldn't wait to get to my class the next day. I highly recommend Hobson's books to anyone.
This second in the series by Hobson is just as good as Grass Beyond the Mountains. The physical challenges faced and the ingenuity and grit shown by Rich and Pan are humbling. Many could wish to be as tough and resilient, meeting near disaster with humor and determination, but few could match their performance. Again, I couldn't put it down, reading at every available moment. Another intriguing and absorbing true tale of pioneering in the 1930's and 1940's, much later than we think of pioneers facing these incredible odds. A fascinating read.
The adventures in this story border on the incredible. If all true, I find the characters and the adventurers a bit unreal.Like the horse drive to the Vancouver stockyards in the middle of the night.Particularly when all that was wanted was a bath and a good time in Vancouver. But, he writes positively about the characters without any touch of racism.
Be sure to read all 3 books.Canada, huge cattle ranch, challenges, lifestyle....1930's and on.Great trilogy-- non-fiction.
This is a sequel to Grass Beyond The Mountains and is just as interesting as a glimpse of a way of life (Ranching in the frozen north of Canada) one might not know about or even expect. Hobson writes very well and informatively. One does wonder why they did what he describes, but then again that is also part of the charm of the experience. If you like western literature, you need to add these books to your library.
Hard book to put down. Read all of the books in order to get the full effect of what these guys (and gals) went through.
I want this story to keep going! Sadly only one more book to go. Don't be frightened off if you are usually a fiction lover, these books do not disappoint! Anyone who loves the out doors, desires a taste of the past, or just loves a good cowboy story will fall in love with Rich, Pan and all the gang! The Chilcotin has hardly changed since then, just better roads, but these books will take you to a place and a time that should never be forgotten!
