Silk Road was the first, but it won't be the last (another one was just busted today). Everyone who cares about drug over doses, the enormous profits drug sellers are amassing, why and how people do this, should read this book, particularly those who still don't believe that legalizing drugs is the only way to stop the drug trade.

I sort of stumbled upon this book while searching true crime, and boy am I glad I did. The dark web is something I've heard exists, but know nothing about it. The concept of The Silk Road is so simple, yet so completely illicit. The "Amazon of illegal drugs." That no one thought about it earlier than Ross Ulbricht is almost a bigger crime than what he did.This was an engrossing read. It is so well-written that I didn't want to put it down. It reminded me of the old Batman TV show from the '60s - how are they going to get out of this one?!? Ross dodged bullets in the form of investigations by no less than four different government agencies. On the other hand, I wondered how on Earth the likes of the FBI (the 'feebs') could possibly catch him since the TOR browser and Bitcoin are completely anonymous.The individual stories are fascinating also; from Ross himself (The Dread Pirate Roberts) to interesting profiles of a handful of the government agents trying to catch him. Sometimes you would start to feel bad for Ross, but then he'd do something awful like order a hit.I can't recommend this book highly enough. It is thorough, easy to read, and suspenseful. Too often, non-fiction writers forget that even non-fiction can be suspenseful and engaging. Not this time.

It’s not only about Ulbricht and his vision, but also about the law enforcement agents and agencies trying to shut him down. I found the inner-workings and interplay between the FBI, Homeland Security, the IRS, and other agencies to be fascinating.Highly recommended.

The author spent tons of time researching for this book, which can clearly be seen from the writing. He seems to take a narrating perspective, narrating the actions of the man behind the silk road, and goes in depth even on the little details about Ross Ulbricht's life. It is told from Ross's point of view as well as the agents who worked on the case, very detailed from all angles. This book should be read by anyone who has an interest in cyber security, or the inner workings of the internet. I may pull a Gary and read this book a few more times.

Nick Bilton did an extensive amount of research and his prose allows for a page-turning ride through what can seem like a "Breaking Bad" for the online world. This book is absolutely addicting and highly recommended.I had to browse through the zero star ratings out of curiosity to see what one would gripe about. It appears some were annoyed by the "Made for Hollywood" style the book is written in but I am not sure that is actually a negative. There also seemed to be some complaints that it was biased against the protagonist but I felt, at times, that Ulbricht comes off as a very sympathetic figure. There is some typical lionization of the authorities who were able to capture him but I do not think it was contrived nor over-embellished.Highly recommended.

Perhaps Bloom's thesis is threatened by the fact that the Bible itself created the idea of humanity and that Shakespeare's work is a commentary on that greater work as all modern philosophy is a commentary on Plato.

When you first get the book you wonder can Professor Bloom really keep you interested in Shakespeare for nearly 800 pages. Yes, he can and with elan. This is not a book that lends itself to a quick read and it does flag a little at the end as maybe the author began to get tired or lose interest or both. Just the same this will clearly this be viewed as one of the seminal works on the Bard.

Like Bloom, I've sat thorough many productions of Shakespeare's works in which the themes and the characters were distorted, mutilated, or simply ignored. I've wondered if there was anyone in the world who actually read the plays instead of using them as a marketing gimmick to display their own concepts. Fortunately, Bloom shows that he has read the plays.Many of this book's reviewers have focused their energy on whether or not Bloom proves his thesis (which is that Shakespeare "invented" the ways that we define ourselves as humans). Just to put my opinion on it, I don't think he did. Then again, I don't think Bloom thinks he did either, as is evident by his statement in the book's end that Chaucer "invented" the human and Shakespeare perfected it.So, why should a reader invest time in a book where it is questionable whether the author proved the central thesis? Because Bloom does such a wonderful job of dissecting the plays that one gets lost in the nuances that he brings out. His critical analyses of the plays are insightful and provocative. While I might take exception to some of his comments (I don't think Richard III is as weak as Bloom thinks it is), his writing style has conveyed his ideas in such a way that I have to respect his opinions.I was glad that I had read/seen some of the plays so that I could understand the context of Bloom's comments about them. I did feel a little lost when reading his analyses of those plays to which I had not been exposed. Instead of wallowing in the feeling, I wanted to read those plays in order to see if I agreed with his comments. Any critical study that makes one want to return to the original source material to discover if its arguments are valid is a very good study. While I don't believe one should accept Bloom's analyses at face value, his comments provide a solid counterpoint to many of the myths about the plays. I heartily recommend this book to those who want to broaden their perspective on Shakespeare's works.

It is a great book filled with thought provoking essays! It can be hard to process sometimes but it is a book full of history lessons and fresh perspectives that every American should read.

I'm finding it difficult to write just a good or a bad review on Paula Rothenberg’s White Privilege. The reason being- there are only so many ways to say that the concept of “white privilege” exists and that white people are benefiting from it.In short, this book is made up of a collection of essays Rothenberg saw as well-suited to approach the notion of white privilege. It is divided up into four parts, each with its own theme. Part one, titled “Whiteness: The Power of Invisibility”, discusses how many white people aren’t aware of the privilege they have, but also don’t want to come to terms with it. The book essentially works as a funnel, first explaining the matters of “whiteness” and “white privilege”, and then delving further into the power behind such privilege, and how to combat it (addressed in part four- “Whiteness: The Power of Resistance”).After reading the few chapters that made up Part one, I found myself in a strange position; I was interested in the material, yet I was falling asleep while reading it. Was I tired? No, I was fine 10 minutes ago. Am I bored? Possibly. I quickly discovered that it was because I felt I was reading the same material over and over again. Thirty pages in and I already knew what the rest of the book would entail; more essays about how “whiteness” has been glorified throughout history and as a result, those who identify as “white” have been benefiting greatly in society. Though I agreed with much of the text in the essays I was presented with, I couldn’t help but feel bored; I knew I could walk away from the book and not feel like I was missing out on anything.Despite this, I found the collection of essays in White Privilege to be beneficial in gaining information from an array of perspectives, however; I was disappointed to find that the entire book was merely just a collection of essays. Rothenberg provides her only insight in the introduction of her book, yet much of what she said primarily just introduced what I would later read from the collection of authors. I didn’t feel any sort of connection with the book because I never actually got to connect with any of the authors. The essays were concise enough to quickly read through them, but I felt I was reading more of a textbook than anything.Overall, I felt that Rothenberg included some very insightful articles, and I appreciated the different perspectives on the matter of white privilege in this world. As a white female (writing this review on a family members account), I was aware of how I have benefited from “white privilege”, but I didn’t quite understand to what length I have reaped such benefits. After reading White Privilege, I was able to walk away with different ideas and a newfound knowledge on the subject, and thankfully I have become more conscious of my own privilege. I would recommend this book to someone who is looking to gain a different kind of wisdom on the issues of “white privilege” and the “whiteness” of living in this world. If looking for a more intriguing read, however, I would advise to maybe find more of an autobiography.

If you want an actual history book about the history of white folks in America that is well-researched, unbiased, and sensitive to the plight of all people groups--yet focused on the history of whites, read Nancy Isenberg's "White Trash: the 400 Year Untold History of Class in America".This book is a collection of essays that are firmly rooted in the subjective and emotive experiences of the writers. Authors cite other authors' opinions as if referencing them makes their opinions facts. This book helped set the stage for the sort of academic thinking that eventually soured beyond redemption as it spilled into social media, creating the "white shame movement," and as a result we got the Alt-right and Donald Trump. The authors, no matter how well-meaning, display all of the symptoms of bigotry that they claim to be fighting. They exalt their emotions and opinions as if they are facts.If you are considering taking a college course that requires this book, proceed with caution; you might be signing up for indoctrination more than education. It's worse than Ann Coulter and Milo Yiannopoulos, and it's the very sort of garbage that makes their polemics palatable.

The issues in this book are hard - they force the reader to look at the lies and stories about our history that we have all been taught, and to look at who we are as a product of the systems those lies and stories have produced.

Not a classic novel, but a good introduction to white privilege for those who are unfamiliar with the concept and the implications.

I have not completed he entre book but it is well worth readng. Although I do not aree with everythng the book says, the premise is true, whites in america have privileges in america that is not open to non whites. Do no get angry, read and understand what is true so that change can be made. In one review the writer was so angry he excused the entire book. This why racial relations in america move so slow. Except what is true.

Read this for a class. Very hard book to read but contains the truth not everyone wants to talk about.

I have had this book for years and it has been the most amazing tool. I have had so many questions answered in "how to" things with this book. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is doing farm/ranch book work. I would like to know if there is a a more recent publication? The one I has a 1999 copyright.

In the 1980's a Safety director at the Motion Picture and Television Safety Comittee's (Hollywood) office wrote to OSHA asking if an "eye wash" on hand could not substitute for Safety Glasses. In a published letter of interpretation the OSHA offices replied that this "wash" (indicating that the worker had already been hurt by a chemical before the corrective action would be taken) was NOT a substitute for protective lenses. I'm certain this is only one of thousands of reasonsthat Production Safety issues needed to be published in the form of a training and reference textbook! This textbook emphasized logical steps that should be taken on any production to prevent safety violations, accidents, health risks and possible death. In that respect it is useful to an international audience of potential and working filmmakers. Whatever "Small" criticism I have of this 480 page text must be qualified with this statement: Somebody really needed to write a text on production safety for the film industry! This author's effort should be applauded, loudly! This is one h--- of a compilation of material about safety laws! BUT (big but), by targeting this specifically at the British and European audience Mr. Small missed a major marketing opportunity. By "targeting" I not only mean that this text lists a compilation of British and European Union laws related to different aspects of safety and filming, but also that he makes reference in this text to "cases" and accidents by name. The cases are named without explanation of the facts of that case. He assumes knowledge by the reader, probably from the British press who he quotes often. I personally don't read the British Press here in the States. With the monopolization of the film industry by the media we don't even hear that many reports about violations of safety on a film set unless they result in a death! Mr. Small's grammar contains colloquialisms that are quaint but not appropriate for an instructional text. It was an error on the part of the Editors in allowing these to be left in this excellent training manual! In repeated instance Mr. Small spells tires as "tyres". The Editor's were apparently ASleep at the wheel when reveiwing this text. I also found acronyms used repeatedly in sections of this text that were not in the acronym appendix. That is confusing and unclear. This text is a training and reference book, as such it should be held to a high standard of grammatical criticism, teaching communications to identify and prevent health and safety risks appears to be a goal of this text's author. In the U.S. (United States) our equivalent to many of the British laws are found in the O.S.H.A. (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) handbook which is available on CD ROM (ROM does not stand for Royal Ontario Museum). Robin Small's text goes into incredible detail to enable his reader to recognize and prevent possible safety violations. It also contains often overlooked (see the example of the Safety Committee paragraph 1) but common sense thinking about Safety in a film/tv/video production. It's a 4 on a scale of 1-5, and as soon as I learn how to spel I'll write a book about why identifying all the safety risks is useless if you're not enpowered to fire violators, including chemically handicapped stars, and as one photographer's wife called him, "pigs" who don't listen to knowledgeable persons of the opposite sex!

Awesome read. Author notes his sources and debunk many that suggests that the Egyptians were any other race than Black. Even when Herodotus is mentioned as an historical fact, many refuse to accept truth but the author gives plenty evidence. I like it when he says, "Theories are more precious to some scholars than facts, even when the facts flatly contradict their theories (John D Jackson). So true! Too bad that the world is full of liars or even people who were misinformed by liars because of prejudice and hatred. Awesome read though... really enjoyed the book.

Anyone wishing to go beyond what the education system in America can provide should read this book. it should be read with Cheikh Anta Diop's precolonial Black Africa..

Excellent material, and reference source. My only complaint is several pages in my copy were cut irregular, with some pages shorter than others, and other pages were topped off too long leaving the bottom half of characters showing. Resulting in a non-professional (interior) appearance.

Very well written, small but jam-packed with information. The type of book that you gotta read more than ounce because of its wealth of knowledge.

This is very old and very poorly done. He starts out mentioning [not discussing] 19th century concepts of race and says now that is wrapped up let's move on. Believe me NOTHING was wrapped up in his faulty thinking. He has no academic background and before you call me an academic snob be aware that academia teachers historians how to critically analyze data and evaluate sources. He does not critically analyze or evaluate anything. Some readers say it is very well referenced. There is no bibliography or references cited. Just saying an author's name in the text is NOT a reference. A reference is something you can go back to. This information is missing. I'm off to find something more recent and valuable to read. In this day of fake news, you need to be careful what you read. It might have been an okay article 80 years ago but it does not stand up to scrutiny today. It is an article, not a book. Beware of this.

I'm a fan of the author's work. Nearly every paragraph supported with a reference. I have many of the books he sited so I'm familiar with his theses.

Not worth your time. Petty self-righteousness and conspiracy theories. Spends way too much time beating the white supremacism horse, almost no time on Ethiopian contributions.
