From the Author

In addition to being recognized as the authoritative book on the subject, Internetworking With TCP/IP Volume 1 ranks among the best-selling networking texts. Despite its technical depth, Volume 1 appeals to a wide audience in both industry and academia: I have received notes of appreciation from many managers, engineers, computer programmers, and students. Some have praised the concise, clear explanations. One simply said, ``Thanks for a superior effort.'' Many engineers have written to tell me they found the book so helpful that they now recommend it to others as the ``Internetworking bible''. Writing and updating Volume 1 of Internetworking with TCP/IP has been among the most rewarding efforts of my career. It is also gratifying that the best universities use Volume 1 as the textbook in their networking classes. In addition to its impact in the United States, foreign demand is also high. The text has been translated into Chinese, Farsi, French, Korean, Polish, Japanese, Spanish, and Vietnamese. I have lectured from the text in Asia and Europe as well as throughout the U.S. and Canada; in each location, engineers have told me they use Volume 1 extensively. The protocols keep changing as the Internet evolves. The latest edition represents a major update, with substantial changes throughout the text. In addition to updates, new chapters have been added on topics such as mobile IP, Network Address Translation and Virtual Private Networks, and transmission of voice and video over the Internet. I know you will find this book both readable and rewarding.

I would have returned this item but my window closed. This version explicitly states in the copy write that it is for sale only in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Why does that matter other than Amazon infringement on copyright? The appendix are missing which contains very important material making the book less usable.

I am grateful for this book. I like to really understand things and this book makes understanding a reality. It is an exemplary model of technical writing. This is the fourth book I have read on TCP/IP and it should have been the first. Since I am a network engineer with no background in programming some of the illustrations from BSD Unix sailed over my head but there was not enough of this to make me feel that any of my time was wasted. In fact, now I want to get a solid introduction to programming so that I can follow along with the rest of the series this book begins.

Very nice book. No missing pages and this should be for everybody pursuing CCIE.

I have been doing Internet protocol engineering for 12 years and I can say that people in the industry consider Comer Vol 1 to be the bible for Internetworking reference. The fourth edition is nearly three times as thick as my copy of the first edition. Douglas Comer keeps this book up to date and useful for modern Internet developers. If you're a student, read this book. I've gone through a lot of books that claim to be the same thing as Comer Vol 1 and have found none that really compare.

I knew nothing about TCP/IP. As a result, I bought a book "learn TCP/IP in 24 hours" and trashed it after I bought this book, no more 24 hour books. I had no idea what routing is and were to start looking for documents on the internet. This book is scientific and puts it all together. Each chapter lists the RFC that he relied on so you know were the stuff came from. The book is not boring; the author is excellent in explaining ideas. He covers ICMP, GGP, OSPF, EGP, DHCP, DNS, BOOTP, ARP and more. I feel I have accomplished something big by reeading this book. If you are not a beginner in routing, then look at the RFCs they are the source.

As Described. Good Sale.

Douglas Comer is the definitive work on TCP. A book every developer should read.

Still relevant today....the basics of TCP/IP have not changed! Also, an excellent explanation!
